3D Laser Scanning To Expedite The Installation Of ACM Panels

The client was able to fabricate components offsite and plan a flawless installation based on our existing condition data and 3D model. Plus, GPRS' work was conducted entirely at night, mitigating any disruption to construction
Field verification to prefabricate ACM panels
Our client was installing ACM panels to the canopy of a newly constructed airport terminal. The construction plans did not match the existing conditions at the site. A deviation could cause a major issue. The installation process needed to be precisely planned to avoid rework.
The construction plans did not match the existing conditions at the site. The installation process needed to be precisely planned to avoid rework • The shape of the canopy was complicated and stood 65 feet in the air. The client needed field verification and a plan to expedite proper installation of the panels • Installers were working overhead in a lift; there was no room for trial and error Solution • The Project Manager conducted a site walk to devise a plan for the client • The canopy and curtain wall of the airport terminal were 3D laser scanned to capture precise as-built data and generate a 3D model and 2D drawings to facilitate ACM panel installation • 22" x 34" 2D CAD drawings were created with the panel layout for the client to take to the field. This allowed each panel to be labeled with a custom number, cut and shim points Benefits • Laser scanning obtained exact measurements for the client and took away any guesswork from this project • To circumvent the active construction site, the Project Manager scanned the site at night to eliminate movement and trades working • The client was able to fabricate components offsite and plan a flawless installation

Intelligently Visualizing the Built World for Rudolph Libbe Hospital Addition

GPRS saved the GC untold labor hours and cost overruns by detecting clashes, finding deviations before they caused expensive rework, and discovering the buried slab.
Complete subsurface mapping and millimeter-accurate aboveground measurements for a top-down, 360° visualization of a hospital wing and parking area to support a hospital expansion.
The addition is designed to occupy an existing parking lot for hospital employees, patients, and visitors. GPRS performed utility locating, video pipe inspection, and 3D laser scanning to create a comprehensive map and 3D model of the medical center’s infrastructure, both above and below ground.
TASK: Complete subsurface mapping and millimeter-accurate aboveground measurements for a top-down, 360° visualization of a hospital wing and parking area to support a hospital expansion. PROJECT APPLICATION: Rudolph Libbe, a longtime GPRS client and partner, oversaw the construction on the expansion of a northwest Ohio medical center. The addition is designed to occupy an existing parking lot for hospital employees, patients, and visitors. GPRS performed utility locating, video pipe inspection, and 3D laser scanning to create a comprehensive map and 3D model of the medical center’s infrastructure, both above and below ground. PROBLEM SOLUTION BENEFITS n Rudolph Libbe received millimeteraccurate laser scan data and an integrated 3D BIM model to precisely design and plan the building addition during preconstruction. n Non-destructive utility-locate methods reduced the number of unknown utilities and obstructions for the design and construction teams. n GPRS’ as builts allowed Rudolph Libbe to plan the new foundation and identify areas where further investigation would be warranted to prevent design and utility clashes. n With comprehensive field services provided by GPRS, Rudolph Libbe saved time and money on change orders, and eliminated subsurface damage during the construction process. With parts of the medical center’s campus dating back to the mid- 1800s, inaccurate as built data and unknown subsurface obstructions could jeopardize construction planning. n It was imperative that the proposed locations of the structural foundation and planned utilities coordinated with the existing conditions. n Rudolph Libbe desired 3D as builts to plan and complete the building addition, such as structural and utility tie-in information. n Traditional exploration methods typically include “soft” excavation methods over the entire building footprint. This option is expensive, time consuming, and requires tremendous coordination. GPRS utilized ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electromagnetic (EM) locating to map the hospital’s utilities. n Video pipe inspection (VPI) recorded the precise location and condition of the facility’s sewer lines, detailed in a NASSCO-certified report. n 3D laser scanning documented as built site data and utility maps to create 2D CAD drawings and a 3D BIM model for virtual design and construction. n GPRS participated in coordination meetings with construction and design team members. NO ONE HAS GONE TO THIS EXTENT TO MAP A SITE ABOVE AND BELOW GROUND. IT WAS IMPERATIVE THAT RUDOLPH LIBBE HAD ACCURATE AS BUILT SITE DATA AND UTILITY MAPS WITH CRITICAL STRUCTURAL AND UTILITY TIE-IN INFORMATION.” JAIME ALTHAUSER | FIELD SUPPORT DIRECTOR, GPRS

GPRS Develops As-Built Model to Convert Historic Building into a Luxury Hotel

3D laser scanning aids the process of architectural design from the early stages of site documentation and conceptualization, to monitoring construction progress and verifying as-built accuracy.
GPRS Laser Scanning developed an as-built model to aid this client in converting a historic building into a luxury hotel. GPRS provided 3D scanning services for a 250,000 square-foot building, including the exterior facades, floors 1-4, basement, roof, penthouses and mechanical spaces. GPRS’ team of in-house architects, engineers and CAD Technicians delivered point cloud files, a 3D model, and TruViews to the client.

Caption: GPRS completed long-range, high-resolution laser scanning of a historic building in Philadelphia. Quote from GPRS Team Member: “The scanning and modeling teams worked around the clock, sometimes 7 days a week, to complete this project. The hard work paid off and we’re thrilled with the result – one of our most highly-detailed architectural 3D models to date.” - Nate Baker, GPRS Service Line Leader – 3D Laser Scanning Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Task: GPRS Laser Scanning developed an as-built model to aid this client in converting a historic building into a luxury hotel. Challenge: The client was challenged with acquiring highly detailed architectural data including walls, ceilings, floors, stairs, balustrades, colonnades etc., and structural data including exposed columns and beams to design the renovation. Due to the size of the building and the ornate features, traditional methods would have taken months to complete and would not have been as accurate or anywhere near as detailed. Solutions: The GPRS scan technician completed 1,680 laser scans in 15 days (an average of over 100 scans per day!) with a Leica P20 ScanStation. A 3D Revit model with varying degrees of LOD 200 and LOD 300 modeling was generated by GPRS’ engineers based on the client’s instruction. Some areas of the building, such as the main lobby and exterior facades, required finer modeling detail over 350. This was deciphered through several project scope conferences between GPRS and the client. Deliverables: GPRS delivered point cloud files (.rcs file formats), a 3D Revit model and TruViews to the client. GPRS worked closely with the project architect to review the model in real time utilizing BIM360 software for shared viewing of the model in its current state throughout the 2-month project. Added Value: 3D laser scanning aids the process of architectural design from the early stages of site documentation and conceptualization, to monitoring construction progress and verifying as-built accuracy. Aside from the benefits of quickly and accurately creating detailed as-built drawings of a site, the data acquired through laser scanning has continued value throughout the project's life. Laser scanning and modeling is exploding in the AEC industry. 3D laser scanning creates a smooth BIM workflow, from the acquisition of data to a polished 3D model. Scan to BIM services are becoming more popular as the need for intelligent 3D CAD models grows.
