BIM Model Aids Design Renovations for Stadium

A BIM model allowed the architect to plan precise renovations to the stadium’s layout, from design changes and material selection, to cost estimation and construction phasing, with ease.
GPRS 3D Laser Scanning Services delivered as-builts and a 3D BIM model to Florida State University for a $255-million-dollar renovation project to update Doak Campbell Stadium with a number of new, modern seating experiences, including founder’s boxes, and a field level club.
An architect requested an ArchiCAD BIM model of a college football stadium to create renovation construction documents.
BIM Model Aids Design Renovations for Stadium A BIM model provided the stadium owners a better understanding of the design updates. Tallahassee, Florida Task: An architect requested an ArchiCAD BIM model of a college football stadium to create renovation construction documents. Problem: A vast amount of space required as-built documentation, over 600,000 sq. ft. needed 3D laser scanned and modeled. The renovation changes were complex. A BIM model was needed to provide the stadium owners a better understanding of the architecture and design updates. Our client needed a single source of data, where all architects on the team could see the latest design and document their changes. Solution: The exterior and interior of the stadium were 3D laser scanned with 2-4 millimeter precision, including three concourse levels, stadium seating, and suites. TruePoint delivered an intensity map point cloud, TruView viewer files, and a Revit 2021 3D model of the stadium. Working from precise details in the 3D model, renovations can be designed right the first time, saving time and costly change orders. Benefits: The architect utilizes the Building Information Modeling (BIM) process to provide their clients a better understanding of the complexities of architecture and design. Technical construction drawings (floor plan views, elevation views, cross-sections, iso-metric representations, etc.) can be effortlessly created from the 3D BIM model and shared with all disciplines. A BIM model allows architects to plan precise renovations, from design changes and material selection, to cost estimation and construction phasing.

Ethanol Plant Upgrades to Increase Efficiency and Lower Emissions ethanol plant model TruePoint.png “We were extremely impressed with GPRS in your timeliness on responding to our request, to having a crew on site to complete the scan, and in your communication with us through the process. This was the first time we have used GPRS modeling services, and the 3D model your team created was outstanding. We were very impressed with the level of detail and quality of the model, the speed in which your team was able to create it, and all aspects of communication during the process.” TLF Engineers’ Senior Project Engineer Seth A.R. Gressley, P.E. Location: Clymers, Indiana Task: GPRS was hired by TLF Engineers to 3D laser scan the exterior cooler area at the southeast corner of The Andersons’ Indiana Ethanol Plant and create a 3D BIM model for process improvements. Project Application: 3D laser scanning collects accurate agricultural as-built data safely from the ground, delivering precise site layout and dimensions for design planning and analysis. Problem: The Andersons’ planned to make process improvements over the next five years to improve operational efficiency and lower plant emissions TLF Engineers needed up-to date as-builts of the plant infrastructure to design upgrades to equipment and production lines Precise details were required for a 2,500 sq. ft. area, including the existing cooler, drop box, dust collectors, platforms, cooler, stack, and ductwork Solution: 3D laser scanning captured a colorized point cloud with 2-4mm accuracy and HDR images in less than 3 minutes per scan location The point cloud was used to develop a 3D BIM model at a very high level of detail with precise architectural, structural, and MEP features TruView 360° photographs provided a virtual site tour, allowing the client to take basic dimensions, estimate clearances, and markup the project site. Benefits: Comprehensive data of existing structure and equipment was crucial to plan process improvements and equipment optimization With a detailed 3D BIM model, the engineering team was able to virtually design the facility layout, retrofit equipment and optimize workflow Updates improved ethanol yield and quality, increased production efficiency, and lowered plant emissions

3D Laser Scanning To Expedite The Installation Of ACM Panels

The client was able to fabricate components offsite and plan a flawless installation based on our existing condition data and 3D model. Plus, GPRS' work was conducted entirely at night, mitigating any disruption to construction
Field verification to prefabricate ACM panels
Our client was installing ACM panels to the canopy of a newly constructed airport terminal. The construction plans did not match the existing conditions at the site. A deviation could cause a major issue. The installation process needed to be precisely planned to avoid rework.
The construction plans did not match the existing conditions at the site. The installation process needed to be precisely planned to avoid rework • The shape of the canopy was complicated and stood 65 feet in the air. The client needed field verification and a plan to expedite proper installation of the panels • Installers were working overhead in a lift; there was no room for trial and error Solution • The Project Manager conducted a site walk to devise a plan for the client • The canopy and curtain wall of the airport terminal were 3D laser scanned to capture precise as-built data and generate a 3D model and 2D drawings to facilitate ACM panel installation • 22" x 34" 2D CAD drawings were created with the panel layout for the client to take to the field. This allowed each panel to be labeled with a custom number, cut and shim points Benefits • Laser scanning obtained exact measurements for the client and took away any guesswork from this project • To circumvent the active construction site, the Project Manager scanned the site at night to eliminate movement and trades working • The client was able to fabricate components offsite and plan a flawless installation
