Highlights THE BOTTOM LINE In three days onsite, GPRS was able to capture the facility’s complex piping and equipment with very minimal shadowing, giving our modeling team the information they required to create a highly-detailed 3D as-built model. INDUSTRY Water Treatment Plant SERVICE 3D Laser Scanning, Mapping & Modeling LOCATION Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Deliverables GPRS delivered registered point cloud data in real-world coordinates in RCS, RCP and E57 format, black and white TruViews (high-resolution panoramic images) at each of the scanner setup locations and an Autodesk Revit LOD 300 model of the site. PROJECT APPLICATION GPRS 3D laser scanning services document the exact architectural, structural, and MEP system layout and dimensions of existing buildings, facilities, and sites. Task GPRS performed 3D laser scanning services for a water treatment plant pump station to capture existing structural and MEP features. Our in-house Mapping & Modeling Team generated an Autodesk Revit LOD 300 Building Information Model (BIM) of the project site. PROBLEM Our client was planning for a complete mechanical rehabilitation of the facility and requested 3D laser scanning services and Building Information Modeling (BIM) from GPRS to expedite the design and execution of this project. Solution We have captured as built site conditions for water treatment plants and wastewater treatment plants from 40 MGD to 1 BGD, documenting the interior and exterior of buildings; foundations; structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing features; equipment, motors, conduit and piping down to ½ inch diameter. GPRS' experienced laser scan team 3D captured all exposed columns, floors, walls, ceilings, stairways, platforms, and MEP equipment and piping ½" in diameter and above, including pumps and valves. GPRS provided a tie-in to topographic survey and processed the data on survey control established for this project. The Mapping & Modeling team broke the model into individual discipline models containing existing MEP features with material type assignments. ‍ Benefits Custom-built advanced Revit families were created for all the varying features so that each layer could be selected or de-selected depending on which portion of the model was being analyzed by the client.

A hotel developer plans to invest $30 million to renovate a 200-room hotel in downtown Toledo, Ohio. Case Study: 3D Laser Scanning Aids In Hotel Renovation Location: Toledo, Ohio TASK: A hotel developer plans to invest $30 million to renovate a 200-room hotel in downtown Toledo, Ohio. GPRS performed laser scanning services to aid this client in the renovation. GPRS 3D laser scanned the exterior elevation, basement, main lobby level, 2nd floor and elevator shaft – more than 30,000 square feet of space. All structural and architectural features were captured as part of the scan. PROBLEM: No accurate as-built drawings existed. It would have been difficult, costly and time consuming to manually measure the 19-story building. The developer was not local, making transportation and lodging an added expense. Safety was also a concern, as the building was partially demolished and contained asbestos. SOLUTION: GPRS quickly mobilized to the site and captured the existing conditions of the hotel. Using a P40 survey-grade Leica ScanStation, the local GPRS Project Manager tied the data to survey control, achieved 2-4mm accuracy, and mitigated movement, ensuring level scans. The client received .rcs Intensity Map Point Cloud files, 2D AutoCAD Floor Plans, 2D Point Cloud Sheets, a 3D Revit 2017 LOD 100 Model and TruViews. To save costs and expedite this project, only the unique floors of the hotel were laser scanned. Capturing the basic structural and architectural features will immensely help the architect in planning the hotel renovations. Laser scanning quickly captured precise data while avoiding the risk of the unsafe environment. GPRS collected all building information, eliminating the need to return to the site for additional measurements. For 3D laser scanning of hotels and other resort properties, contact GPRS. Location: Cincinnati, OH Task: GPRS 3D laser scanned 40,000 square feet of office space on the 6th floor of a building in Cincinnati. The area was recently renovated, and the objective was to capture MEP features to create an accurate as-built survey for the client. GPRS’ Project Manager used a Leica P40 ScanStation to capture 3D point cloud data and GPRS’ in-house engineers created a 3D CAD model. Challenge: The client wanted to complete the laser scan after the space had been framed in, but before the ceiling grid and tiles were installed. This gave the client a very limited window of time to capture the above ceiling piping. They wanted to quickly and accurately capture all MEP components and pipes, so they could install the ceiling and begin to populate the space. Solutions: GPRS maintained constant communication with the client to schedule the scanning just before ceiling grid was installed. With just a few days’ notice, the Project Manager mobilized to the site. GPRS’ experienced technician could ensure that 3D laser scan technology would completely and accurately capture the as-built site conditions. Laser scanning was completed while other contractors continued their work, and complex areas were scheduled during the hours when contractors were off-site. Deliverables: GPRS provided the client with Autodesk Recap files and Black and White Leica TruViews. Also, using preliminary EdgeWise extraction, GPRS engineers provided an AutoCAD .dwg file to the client. Added Value: The scan technician worked during off-peak times, which expedited GPRS’ time on site. Additionally, GPRS’ engineers are trained and experienced in numerous software applications and can create custom deliverables for each client quickly. In this case, ClearEdge 3D Edgewise software was used to process piping and quickly create a 3D model.
