GPRS Insight
“We do a lot of detailed meshes at GPRS, but this scale and this detail, like the refinement that we had to do for these projects has been a step above.” – Adam Silbaugh, GPRS Modeling Team Lead

PROJECT APPLICATION
ASK
Task
3D scan multiple U.S. cathedrals and use that data to create highly accurate, intricate meshes to help Luminiscence design immersive light shows and projections.
PROBLEM
- Luminiscence required highly intricate 3D laser scans of four cathedrals to support projection mapping for immersive light shows
- Manual measurement methods would have been incredibly difficult due to the massive scale, high ceilings, and non-linear geometry
- The client’s creative partners needed accurate 3D mesh models to capture architectural details and bring the projection designs to life
Solution
- GPRS Reality Capture Project Managers scanned all interiors, and the Basilica of Saint Mary’s envelope in full color with 2-4mm accuracy
- Each of the cathedrals included in the initial project phase presented specific challenges with regard to interior data capture
- GPRS Mapping & Modeling Team segmented the data into levels of detail and unified the scans into a single, highly detailed 40 million polygon mesh model
Benefits
- The high definition 3D scans enabled precise projection mapping and provided the creative team with accurate digital representations of each space
- These models allowed Luminiscence to transform iconic cathedrals into immersive light and sound shows with confidence
- Multiple Basilica of Saint Mary light shows have sold out, reflecting the project’s success
- The creative team now has precise 3D mesh models to support several new markets planning to launch in Q3 and Q4 of 2026
