GPRS 3D Laser Scans Hard Rock Stadium For Mixed Reality Super Bowl Feature

3D laser scanning captures real-world spaces with millimeter precision for clients to create engaging virtual reality experiences.
GPRS 3D laser scanned the Hard Rock Stadium for use in a mixed-reality experience during the 2020 Super Bowl on February 2. Mixed reality is a blend of physical and virtual worlds that includes both real and computer-generated objects. The two worlds are "mixed" together to create a realistic environment.

Case Study: TruePoint 3D Laser Scans Hard Rock Stadium For Mixed Reality Super Bowl Feature We would like to thank The Famous Group, the Miami Dolphins and the Hard Rock Stadium for allowing us to be a part of this project.” - Ryan Hacker, President of TruePoint Laser Scanning Location: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, Florida Task: TruePoint 3D laser scanned the Hard Rock Stadium for use in a mixed-reality experience during the 2020 Super Bowl on February 2. Mixed reality is a blend of physical and virtual worlds that includes both real and computer-generated objects. The two worlds are "mixed" together to create a realistic environment. Challenge: It was important to the client that the existing spatial layout was captured with great accuracy. When generating the mixed reality experience, computer-generated objects must precisely interact with the physical environment to sell the realism. Solution: The upper and lower stands, field topography, LED display screens, LED ribbon around stadium, two Hard Rock Stadium signs and roof structure were documented with a survey-grade Leica P40 ScanStation. In two days onsite, 172 laser scans of precise point cloud data was captured. TruePoint’s team of in-house engineers quickly generated a 3D Revit model for the client. The client planned to use Autodesk Maya, a 3D computer animation, modeling and rendering software to create an augmented reality (AR) simulation. Deliverables: TruePoint delivered point cloud files in .rcs format, a 3D Revit Model, and a FBX file. The client was also able to view the model progress using Autodesk A360, a web-browser application that allows engineers and project teams to work together more easily in an online workspace. Added Value: “Everything we do at TruePoint Laser Scanning is highly custom. This client wanted portions of the stadium modeled in LOD 100 and portions modeled in LOD 300. Our deliverables were customized, so the client is only paying for what they need,” Aaron Hunt, Lead Technical Manager. John Glenn International Airport – Columbus, Ohio Airport Entrance Upgrades Requires 3D Laser Scanning ‍ TASK: GPRS provided 3D laser scanning services for John Glenn International Airport in Columbus, Ohio. The client was upgrading the existing airport entrance. Renovations included the installation of a prefabricated ceiling panel system and new doors. The primary objective of the laser scan was to capture the ground, curbs, ceiling beams, and related structural features to design and prefabricate the upgrades. ‍ CHALLENGE: The client had a 60-day window to complete renovations, and no in-house engineers. The airport entrance did not match the architectural drawing; the ceiling structure was sloped where the drawings showed it level, and differing beam heights and widths between two levels of the airport created additional challenges. They needed accurate as builts to tie the upgrades to the existing structure and align with the camber of the structure. The client also had to deliver precise measurements to the ceiling panel system prefabricator and to provide the builders of the custom doors precise measurements on entryways. This would minimize any assumptions that could lead to field changes and schedule delays during construction. ‍ SOLUTION: The airport, which serves 7 million annual travelers, needed to remain in operation with little to no interruption of services. So, 3D laser scanning was completed at night during low passenger activity periods, so the airport could remain in operation. The GPRS Mapping & Modeling Team worked closely with the client to create maps and models to expedite components and minimize inaccuracies. 2D CAD drawings, and a 3D BIM model were delivered, which eliminated field adjustments and delays during renovations. The laser scan data also helped the client to plan how the new entrance would tie into the existing entrance, while taking into account all of the field variables.

This was the first time we have used GPRS modeling services, and the 3D model your team created was outstanding. We were very impressed with the level of detail and quality of the model, the speed in which your team was able to create it, and all aspects of communication during the process.” TLF Engineers’ Senior Project Engineer Seth A.R. Gressley, P.E. Location: Clymers, Indiana Task: GPRS was hired by TLF Engineers to 3D laser scan the exterior cooler area at the southeast corner of The Andersons’ Indiana Ethanol Plant and create a 3D BIM model for process improvements. Project Application: 3D laser scanning collects accurate agricultural as-built data safely from the ground, delivering precise site layout and dimensions for design planning and analysis. Problem: The Andersons’ planned to make process improvements over the next five years to improve operational efficiency and lower plant emissions TLF Engineers needed up-to date as-builts of the plant infrastructure to design upgrades to equipment and production lines Precise details were required for a 2,500 sq. ft. area, including the existing cooler, drop box, dust collectors, platforms, cooler, stack, and ductwork Solution: 3D laser scanning captured a colorized point cloud with 2-4mm accuracy and HDR images in less than 3 minutes per scan location The point cloud was used to develop a 3D BIM model at a very high level of detail with precise architectural, structural, and MEP features TruView 360° photographs provided a virtual site tour, allowing the client to take basic dimensions, estimate clearances, and markup the project site. Benefits: Comprehensive data of existing structure and equipment was crucial to plan process improvements and equipment optimization With a detailed 3D BIM model, the engineering team was able to virtually design the facility layout, retrofit equipment and optimize workflow Updates improved ethanol yield and quality, increased production efficiency, and lowered plant emissions
