BIM Model Aids Design Renovations for Stadium A BIM model provided the stadium owners a better understanding of the design updates. Tallahassee, Florida Task: An architect requested an ArchiCAD BIM model of a college football stadium to create renovation construction documents. Problem: A vast amount of space required as-built documentation, over 600,000 sq. ft. needed 3D laser scanned and modeled. The renovation changes were complex. A BIM model was needed to provide the stadium owners a better understanding of the architecture and design updates. Our client needed a single source of data, where all architects on the team could see the latest design and document their changes. Solution: The exterior and interior of the stadium were 3D laser scanned with 2-4 millimeter precision, including three concourse levels, stadium seating, and suites. TruePoint delivered an intensity map point cloud, TruView viewer files, and a Revit 2021 3D model of the stadium. Working from precise details in the 3D model, renovations can be designed right the first time, saving time and costly change orders. Benefits: The architect utilizes the Building Information Modeling (BIM) process to provide their clients a better understanding of the complexities of architecture and design. Technical construction drawings (floor plan views, elevation views, cross-sections, iso-metric representations, etc.) can be effortlessly created from the 3D BIM model and shared with all disciplines. A BIM model allows architects to plan precise renovations, from design changes and material selection, to cost estimation and construction phasing.

Water Treatment Plant Expansion Utilizes 3D Laser Scanning Point Cloud Data

Raw point cloud data provided an engineering firm in California the accurate measurements they needed to design and plan the expansion of a water treatment facility in Texas thanks to 3D laser scanning
Capture accurate existing conditions and provide raw as-built, point cloud data for the expansion of a water treatment plant
An engineering firm was generating construction drawings to expand an existing water treatment plant. The firm required accurate field conditions in raw point cloud data (.rcp files and related supporting files) to create new layouts for construction.
No as-built drawings existed for the water treatment plant. Accurate existing conditions were needed to plan for the facility expansion • Exact dimensions were required to plan modifications and fabricate pipe • The project's engineering firm was located in California; the water treatment plant was located in Texas. They needed accurate information available in a digital platform to begin design planning Solution • Using a Leica Scan Station, a GPRS Project Manager completed 40 laser scans of the building to capture architectural, structural, and MEP features • The client received a colorized point cloud in ReCap (.rcp files and related supporting files) and TruView files that allowed the engineering firm and the plant to coordinate off-site planning and prefabrication for the expansion Benefits Laser scanning is an extremely efficient and accurate way to gather data necessary to create construction drawings of a building or space. • 3D laser scanning eliminated the firm's travel to the Water Treatment Plant. In one day on site, enough scans were taken to create a complete colorized point cloud of the space. • 3D laser scan data provided the Engineering Firm critical tie points on tanks and lines, information that was crucial to the expansion.

3D BIM Model Aids Wastewater Treatment Plant Heat Exchanger Upgrades

Our client required a high-detail 3D BIM model to accurately visualize, design, modify, and manage the update of a heat exchanger within a Wastewater Treatment facility, enabling efficient updates and modifications without the need for extensive on-site measurements or manual drafting.
GPRS was called to 3D laser scan the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant and render an LOD 300 BIM model of the three-level heat exchanger for ABC Piping Co. to update one of the systems.
GPRS 3D laser scanned the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant to develop a LOD 300 3D BIM model for ABC Piping Co. to update one of the heat exchangers at the facility.
Highlights THE BOTTOM LINE Our client required a high-detail 3D BIM model to accurately visualize, design, modify, and manage the update of a heat exchanger within a Wastewater Treatment facility, enabling efficient updates and modifications without the need for extensive on-site measurements or manual drafting. INDUSTRY Water Treatment Plant & Wastewater Treatment Plant SERVICE 3D Laser Scanning; Mapping & Modeling LOCATION Cleveland, Ohio PM Insight The Leica RTC360 can generate 3D point clouds in less than 2 minutes, delivering our clients quick data visualization for project planning. The Leica RTC360 scans in color, which is useful when you need a true representation of a site in color detail. Deliverables LOD 300 3D BIM Model Task GPRS was called to 3D laser scan the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant and render an LOD 300 BIM model of the three-level heat exchanger for ABC Piping Co. to update one of the systems. PROBLEM Our client desired to upgrade the heat exchanger to reduce maintenance, energy consumption, and overall operational expenses in the long term. To properly design, prefabricate, and install system updates, ABC Piping Co. required a detailed 3D BIM model of the current mechanical and piping system, including pipe sizes, materials, and routing. Solution GPRS partnered with ABC Piping Co. to 3D laser scan and model the heat exchanger at the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant for upgrades. GPRS utilized the Leica RTC360 laser scanner to capture as-built conditions from 3 different floors around the existing heat exchangers. 108 laser scans were taken with the RTC360 from different locations to capture the intricate details of this very dense mechanical facility. The 3D BIM model provideed a detailed and accurate representation of the existing heat exchangers within the facility, enabling engineers and designers to clearly understand the spatial relationships, constraints, and interdependencies between various components. Benefits 3D laser scanning captured precise layout, dimensions, and locations of the existing architectural, structural, MEP, FP, and HVAC system elements for this facility in a point cloud. The GPRS Mapping & Modeling team transformed point cloud data into an intelligent 3D BIM model to aid system engineering. A 3D BIM model saved in a shared environment allowed all disciplines to work together to identify and resolve clashes before the system integration begins, ensuring a smooth retrofit with minimal rework. ‍
