Dallas Fort Worth International Airport – DFW Airport, Texas Prefabrication of Canopies for Parking Lot Structures ‍ TASK: GPRS provided 3D laser scanning services for six parking lot structures at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, ranging from 500 to 2,500 square feet in plan area. The client wanted accurate dimensional information to prefabricate replacement canopies for each of the structures. ‍ CHALLENGE: The client needed accurate information to design replacement fabric panels, including the location of the attachment plates and fasteners. They requested a quick turnaround on this project, GPRS expedited deliverables within 15 working days of the purchase order. ‍ SOLUTION: Dimensions were quickly verified in these high traffic areas of the airport with a Leica laser scanner. GPRS’ Mapping & Modeling Team created an LOD 200 Revit 3D model including basic structural elements, such as exposed structural columns and joists, grade and canopy. With the 3D model, the following details could be used to expedite prefabrication and installation - elevations, plan dimensions, radii of rolled elements, plus locations and dimensions of all attachment hardware.

Problem: The Andersons’ planned to make process improvements over the next five years to improve operational efficiency and lower plant emissions TLF Engineers needed up-to date as-builts of the plant infrastructure to design upgrades to equipment and production lines Precise details were required for a 2,500 sq. ft. area, including the existing cooler, drop box, dust collectors, platforms, cooler, stack, and ductwork Solution: 3D laser scanning captured a colorized point cloud with 2-4mm accuracy and HDR images in less than 3 minutes per scan location The point cloud was used to develop a 3D BIM model at a very high level of detail with precise architectural, structural, and MEP features TruView 360° photographs provided a virtual site tour, allowing the client to take basic dimensions, estimate clearances, and markup the project site. An engineering firm was generating construction drawings to expand an existing water treatment plant. The firm required accurate field conditions in raw point cloud data (.rcp files and related supporting files) to create new layouts for construction.
No as-built drawings existed for the water treatment plant. Accurate existing conditions were needed to plan for the facility expansion • Exact dimensions were required to plan modifications and fabricate pipe • The project's engineering firm was located in California; the water treatment plant was located in Texas. They needed accurate information available in a digital platform to begin design planning Solution • Using a Leica Scan Station, a GPRS Project Manager completed 40 laser scans of the building to capture architectural, structural, and MEP features • The client received a colorized point cloud in ReCap (.rcp files and related supporting files) and TruView files that allowed the engineering firm and the plant to coordinate off-site planning and prefabrication for the expansion Benefits Laser scanning is an extremely efficient and accurate way to gather data necessary to create construction drawings of a building or space. • 3D laser scanning eliminated the firm's travel to the Water Treatment Plant.
