Precise As-Built Conditions of Church and School

GPRS captures 2-4 millimeter accurate measurements of the complex geometry of every high ceiling & wall, delicate window, sacred item, office, classroom, and more without contact from the ground.
A Denver Catholic church and school constructed in the 1950’s requested 3D laser scanning of their 56,000 sq ft three-building campus to plan for renovations. Our client was an architecture, planning and interior design firm specializing in commercial, institutional and academic design.
A Denver Catholic church and school constructed in the 1950’s requested 3D laser scanning of their 56,000 sq ft three-building campus to plan for renovations.
Location: Denver, Colorado Task: A Denver Catholic church and school constructed in the 1950’s requested 3D laser scanning of their 56,000 sq ft three-building campus to plan for renovations. Our client was an architecture, planning and interior design firm specializing in commercial, institutional and academic design. Problem: Construction documents existed from the original build, but the client was unsure if they were up to date. Each building required a different scanning scope. The church and parish hall required complete exterior and interior documentation, while the school required only exterior documentation. The church required new design drawings and cost estimates from the firm before proceeding with renovations. Solution: In one day on-site, a GPRS/TruePoint Project Manager completed 359 scans with the Leica P50 ScanStation and the RTC360 laser scanner. The client required point cloud files, 2D CAD drawings, a 3D Revit model, and TruViews to understand the existing conditions of the buildings on campus. 2D CAD exterior elevations and floor plans of the church; and exterior elevations of the school were created for this project. An LOD 200 Revit 2021 3D model of the church was delivered with architectural/structural details, including columns, beams, walls, floors, ceilings, doors, windows, stairs, roof, pews, lectern, and alter. An LOD 200 Revit model was delivered of the school exterior. Benefits: Renovations are not new to this campus; they recently added an outdoor learning lab and eucharistic adoration chapel. They understand the value of accurate as-built data. The firm wanted to keep the historic craftsmanship of the church but provide modern updates. A quality point cloud created a reliable as-built BIM model of existing conditions with ¼ inch accuracy tolerance.

3D Laser Scanning a Historic Church for Restoration

To complete the restoration of the church, the client required accurate 2D CAD drawings with precise measurements of the structural and architectural elements.
Our client needed accurate as built documentation to complete a $1.2 million restoration and improvement project for a historic church. The 1875-built church in Glandorf, Ohio was the largest Roman Catholic church built at the time. Built in Neo-Gothic style, it contained a 225-foot spire, beautiful statues imported from Austria and stained-glass windows imported from Germany. In 2017, the church underwent a 3-month historic restoration and improvement project. The project involved preventive measures including fiber-glassing the interior walls, painting and installing updated storm windows to protect the stained glass. In addition, damaged sections of the archway and niches were repaired, and a ceiling was lowered in the vestibule to highlight a stained-glass window.
GPRS’ client needed accurate as-built documentation to complete a $1.2 million restoration and improvement project for a historic church.
Our client provides historic restoration services and is dedicated to providing excellence in conservation and restoration. To complete the restoration of the church, the client required accurate CAD drawings with precise measurements of the structural and architectural elements. With a Leica P40 laser scanner, GPRS quickly captured the structural and architectural details of the church’s interior with92 laser scans. 3D laser scanning captured full spatial and color data with high detail and precision. Laser scanning can capture extreme detail for even the most intricate buildings easily. 3D laser scanning delivered a valuable data set to the client. Intensity map point cloud files provided digital visualization. 2D CAD drawings were created from accurate scan data. From skyscrapers to sewer lines, GPRS Intelligently Visualizes The Built World® to keep your projects on time, on budget, and safe.

LiDAR Survey Dimensions of a 6-Story Building

GPRS’ accurate measurements allowed the client to order dimensionally-correct windows for each specific opening, thus reducing any change orders for this project. The client can review the 6-story building and its openings in 3 separate deliverables: the point cloud, the 2D drawings, and the TruViews.
To capture the dimensions of all the window openings on the building.
GPRS captured the accurate dimensions of the window openings safely from the ground.
Location: Detroit, Michigan Task: To capture the dimensions of all the window openings on the building. Challenge: The building was a 6-story building with windows on all four sides. The height alone of a 6-story building can create enough challenges when obtaining accurate measurements of window dimensions. This project, however, presented additional challenges. For example, the exterior of the building was not easily accessible by lift or scaffolding due to its being located along a busy road with minimal right of way. Additionally, the other sides of the building also had obstacles which further limited access to the windows. Solutions: By utilizing laser scanning, a non-contact measurement tool, GPRS was able to capture the accurate dimensions of the window openings safely from the ground, as well as from other safe locations. Windowsills can sometimes be difficult to capture when scanning from the ground, but our scan technicians were able to set up on and scan from surrounding buildings and rooftops to ensure enough elevation to capture these features accurately for our client. And since laser scanning is not only safe and accurate, but also is extremely fast, the field work was limited to one day. Deliverable: GPRS provided our client with 2D elevations in AutoCAD, which included the dimensions of the edge of existing rough openings dictated by the limestone cladding. Additionally, we supplied our client with TruViews – 3D photographs overlaid on top of the point cloud, allowing for rudimentary measurements directly from the photos. The client can now view the building and its openings in 3 separate deliverables: the point cloud, the 2D drawings, and the TruViews. Added Value: Many times, in field measuring, there is an assumption made, after measuring several similar units, that others will likely be of the same dimensions. With laser scanning we can easily and accurately determine the dimensions of each opening individually. As is common with many older buildings, many of the openings of this building appeared to be the same size but, in fact, varied enough to cause potential problems. GPRS’ accurate measurements allowed the client to order dimensionally-correct windows for each specific opening, thus reducing any change orders for windows that did not fit perfectly the first time they were placed.
