Using 3D Laser Scanning For Facility Design Modification

When plant engineers at a pet food packaging facility needed to make modifications, they asked GPRS 3D Laser Scanning to provide as built documentation and a 3D model to plan retrofits to the existing structure. The project site consisted of 140,000 sq. ft. of interior space. Approximately 100,000 sq. ft. of this was single-story warehouse space, consisting of a central palletizer, semi- truck loading bays and temporary material storage. The remaining 40,000 sq. ft. contained 7 levels of elevated platforms containing product packaging equipment. TruePoint captured all architectural and structural features, equipment, conduit and piping.

CASE STUDY LOCATION Bowling Green, Kentucky TASK: When plant engineers at a pet food packaging facility needed to make modifications, they asked TruePoint Laser Scanning to provide as built documentation and a 3D model to plan retrofits to the existing structure. PROBLEM SOLUTION BENEFITS n By using laser scanning instead of traditional survey methods, TruePoint saved this client thousands of dollars in field survey work and drafting time, and provided greater detail than what would have otherwise been possible. With an accurate, comprehensive data set, plant engineers were able to complete virtual interference checks, avoiding design rework costs. n In two days on site, TruePoint’s experienced project managers 3D scanned the 140,000 sq. ft. area with millimeter accuracy. 523 scans were taken with the Leica P50 and RTC 360 laser scanners. This project was scanned on the weekend to avoid disruption to production. n After proper data registration, TruePoint’s in-house modeling team built an information-rich 3D BIM model for the client. TruePoint’s experienced team has optimized workflows for importing data, registration, creating deliverables, quality checks and transferring data to clients. n No as built plans existed for the facility. The plant was complex, capturing the existing spatial data of the conduit and piping in a high level of detail was important to the plant engineers. n There were silos and other pieces of large equipment that would be difficult to measure precisely using traditional or manual measuring techniques. /// GPRS LASER SCANNING SERVICES ///// 3D LASER SCANNING CASE STUDY: USING 3D LASER SCANNING FOR FACILITY DESIGN MODIFICATIONS “IT’S HARD FOR ME TO IMAGINE HOW THIS PET FOOD PACKAGING FACILITY COULD HAVE BEEN DOCUMENTED WITHOUT 3D LASER SCANNING.” TRUEPOINT PROJECT MANAGER

3D Laser Scanning To Expedite The Installation Of ACM Panels

The client was able to fabricate components offsite and plan a flawless installation based on our existing condition data and 3D model. Plus, GPRS' work was conducted entirely at night, mitigating any disruption to construction
Field verification to prefabricate ACM panels
Our client was installing ACM panels to the canopy of a newly constructed airport terminal. The construction plans did not match the existing conditions at the site. A deviation could cause a major issue. The installation process needed to be precisely planned to avoid rework.
The construction plans did not match the existing conditions at the site. The installation process needed to be precisely planned to avoid rework • The shape of the canopy was complicated and stood 65 feet in the air. The client needed field verification and a plan to expedite proper installation of the panels • Installers were working overhead in a lift; there was no room for trial and error Solution • The Project Manager conducted a site walk to devise a plan for the client • The canopy and curtain wall of the airport terminal were 3D laser scanned to capture precise as-built data and generate a 3D model and 2D drawings to facilitate ACM panel installation • 22" x 34" 2D CAD drawings were created with the panel layout for the client to take to the field. This allowed each panel to be labeled with a custom number, cut and shim points Benefits • Laser scanning obtained exact measurements for the client and took away any guesswork from this project • To circumvent the active construction site, the Project Manager scanned the site at night to eliminate movement and trades working • The client was able to fabricate components offsite and plan a flawless installation

A hotel developer plans to invest $30 million to renovate a 200-room hotel in downtown Toledo, Ohio. Case Study: 3D Laser Scanning Aids In Hotel Renovation Location: Toledo, Ohio TASK: A hotel developer plans to invest $30 million to renovate a 200-room hotel in downtown Toledo, Ohio. GPRS performed laser scanning services to aid this client in the renovation. GPRS 3D laser scanned the exterior elevation, basement, main lobby level, 2nd floor and elevator shaft – more than 30,000 square feet of space. All structural and architectural features were captured as part of the scan. PROBLEM: No accurate as-built drawings existed. It would have been difficult, costly and time consuming to manually measure the 19-story building. The developer was not local, making transportation and lodging an added expense. Safety was also a concern, as the building was partially demolished and contained asbestos. SOLUTION: GPRS quickly mobilized to the site and captured the existing conditions of the hotel. Using a P40 survey-grade Leica ScanStation, the local GPRS Project Manager tied the data to survey control, achieved 2-4mm accuracy, and mitigated movement, ensuring level scans. The client received .rcs Intensity Map Point Cloud files, 2D AutoCAD Floor Plans, 2D Point Cloud Sheets, a 3D Revit 2017 LOD 100 Model and TruViews. To save costs and expedite this project, only the unique floors of the hotel were laser scanned.
