Pharmaceutical Upgrades Completed With the Help of Laser Scanning

The use of laser scan technology has resulted in accurate and efficient data collection, precise as-built documentation, cost savings due to improved design accuracy, and improved project visualization and collaboration.
A pharmaceutical company was installing some new equipment in various areas of the facility. Existing machinery was being removed, new machinery was being installed and MEP piping was being re-routed throughout the area. GPRS provided laser scanning services to collect point cloud data on four levels and generate a 3D model for the client. Before starting renovations of this existing facility, the client desired to document existing conditions to plan layout and process flow upgrades.
The use of laser scan technology has resulted in accurate and efficient data collection, true as built documentation, cost savings due to improved design accuracy, and improved project visualization and collaboration.
Location: Social Circle, GA Project Manager Insight: “The cost of laser scanning and modeling should easily be offset by the cost savings from reduced re-work during the facility renovations.” Andy Foshee, TruePoint Southeast Regional Manager. Task: A pharmaceutical company was installing some new equipment in various areas of the facility. Existing machinery was being removed, new machinery was being installed and MEP piping was being re-routed throughout the area. TruePoint provided laser scanning services to collect point cloud data on four levels and generate a 3D model for the client. Before starting renovations of this existing facility, the client desired to document existing conditions and plan layout and process flow upgrades. Challenge: Upgrading existing pharmaceutical manufacturing sites can be challenging. The space available is restricted and bringing in new equipment is sometimes tricky. Our client needed to make several tie-ins and requested a Revit model for planning. Solution: Using the Leica P50 ScanStation, TruePoint captured structural features, MEP piping and equipment ½ inch and above. An LOD 300 Revit model was requested to ensure more accurate, efficient and cost-effective execution of the project. With planning, the client was able to install the new machinery and re-route piping without any field rework. This also resulted in reduced downtime and significant savings by returning the facility to production quickly. Deliverable: TruePoint delivered a point cloud .rcp file, JetStream Viewer file and an LOD 300 Revit model to the client. TruePoint's team of CAD technicians modeled the following details for the client: Pipe - 72,000 linear feet Conduit - 75,000 linear feet Duct - 11,000 linear feet Pipe modeled down to 1/2 inch in diameter. Added Value: The use of laser scan technology has resulted in accurate and efficient data collection, true as built documentation, cost savings due to improved design accuracy, and improved project visualization and collaboration. GPRS 3D Laser Scans A Massachusetts Library Prior to Renovation

292 individual interior and exterior LiDAR scans were completed in a single day, capturing existing conditions including all historical features, all without disrupting the historic site's operations or impacting its valuable contents so that a renovation could be designed and planned without requiring time consuming hand-measurements.
3D laser scanning a historic Massachusetts library to create a 3D BIM model.
GPRS 3D laser scanned a historic library in Amherst, Massachusetts and created an LOD 300 Revit model for the architect. The interior and exterior of the library was 3D scanned, this was an estimated 47,000 sq. ft. of space with 4 levels.
Built in 1919: there were no existing as-built details availableIt was likely that the existing condition of the building included unsquared architectural features The library’s historic features had to be preserved and intact during and post-renovation The library needed to remain open to patrons and conduct regular operations while visualization was completedPaintings of Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost, plus local historical exhibits, were contained in a gallery on site that needed to remain untouched Laser scanning was executed on Patriot’s Day, a Massachusetts state holiday. The library was closed so all scans could be completed without disrupting operations292 laser scans were completed of the interior and exterior of the library; approximately 47,000 sq. ft. of space spanning four levels An intensity map point cloud and 3D BIM model were delivered to the client, giving them accurate data of the current as-built conditions 3D scanning provided updated floor plans and captured existing conditions via a 3D BIM model to speed redesign and planningArchitects, designers, and contractors could access and utilize the BIM model and 3D laser scanning data at any stage of the restoration process for reference3D laser scanning is non-contact; scanning from a distance minimized the risk of damaging historical art work and exhibits and was completed in a single day on site

Power Plant Renovations Require 3D Laser Scanning

In just one day on site, GPRS was able to capture the entire existing condition of the facility, even in dense pipe runs and hard-to-reach spaces, with 2-4mm accuracy to provide the client with an accurate 3D BIM model for planning, fabrication, and clash detection
An engineering firm needed to have existing conditions of a power plant documented and modeled to plan for renovations.
An engineering firm needed to have existing conditions of a power plant documented and modeled to plan for renovations.
Problem • The client needed to accurately document the existing conditions of the plant without interruptions to the power supply • Many of the pipe runs were dense and impossible to accurately measure by hand • The client required 2-4 mm accuracy of dense piping and pipe runs throughout the facility • The client needed to guarantee that installations complied with safety regulations Solution • In one day on site, GPRS' Project Manager used the Leica RTC360 laser scanner to capture 150 laser scans, documenting existing conditions of the facility • Many of the pipe runs were dense and impossible to accurately measure by hand • GPRS generated a 3D BIM model for use in CAD software, including all civil, structural, electrical, and mechanical features, piping, and conduit 1" and larger Benefits • Due to the vast space and density of the piping, it would have been much more difficult and time consuming to accurately depict the location of pipe runs, structural features, and other details in the plant manually • The point cloud data from laser scanning was used by CAD technicians to create an intelligent 3D BIM model for planning, fabrication and clash detection • Verified measurements and virtual planning guarantee installations will comply with safety regulations • Using virtual 3D models, the firm can plan and model future developments to manage the facility without having to re-enter the site
