BIM Model Aids Design Renovations for Stadium

A BIM model allowed the architect to plan precise renovations to the stadium’s layout, from design changes and material selection, to cost estimation and construction phasing, with ease.
GPRS 3D Laser Scanning Services delivered as-builts and a 3D BIM model to Florida State University for a $255-million-dollar renovation project to update Doak Campbell Stadium with a number of new, modern seating experiences, including founder’s boxes, and a field level club.
An architect requested an ArchiCAD BIM model of a college football stadium to create renovation construction documents.
BIM Model Aids Design Renovations for Stadium A BIM model provided the stadium owners a better understanding of the design updates. Tallahassee, Florida Task: An architect requested an ArchiCAD BIM model of a college football stadium to create renovation construction documents. Problem: A vast amount of space required as-built documentation, over 600,000 sq. ft. needed 3D laser scanned and modeled. The renovation changes were complex. A BIM model was needed to provide the stadium owners a better understanding of the architecture and design updates. Our client needed a single source of data, where all architects on the team could see the latest design and document their changes. Solution: The exterior and interior of the stadium were 3D laser scanned with 2-4 millimeter precision, including three concourse levels, stadium seating, and suites. TruePoint delivered an intensity map point cloud, TruView viewer files, and a Revit 2021 3D model of the stadium. Working from precise details in the 3D model, renovations can be designed right the first time, saving time and costly change orders. Benefits: The architect utilizes the Building Information Modeling (BIM) process to provide their clients a better understanding of the complexities of architecture and design. Technical construction drawings (floor plan views, elevation views, cross-sections, iso-metric representations, etc.) can be effortlessly created from the 3D BIM model and shared with all disciplines. A BIM model allows architects to plan precise renovations, from design changes and material selection, to cost estimation and construction phasing.

Scan-to-BIM of 15-Story Structure

The cost avoidance impact of the integrated scan-to-BIM workflow saved the project an estimated 5% of the total contract amount, a savings of approximately $1,500,000.
GPRS provided 3D laser scanning and modeling services for a 15-story structure in the greater Cincinnati, Ohio area. This included 8 floors of commercial space, 2 stories of retail, 5 levels of parking garage, as well as the exterior façade and roof surface. The GPRS Project Manager captured over 1.54 million square-feet of space, and in-house engineers created a custom Revit model based on the point cloud of the existing conditions. Once construction was complete, this project received the 2017 Build Ohio Award for New Construction Over $30 million.

3D Laser Scanning Before Concrete Pour Saved Client Thousands

The deliverables provided will be an asset for years to come as they can be referenced for any future coring or drilling needs showing where everything embedded in the slab was prior to pouring.
The client was in active build of an eight-story apartment complex in Houston, Texas. Each floor had five to six concrete pours scheduled on specific dates over an 8-month period. GPRS 3D laser scanned each area to capture the existing conduit, post-tensioning, rebar plan and sleeves prior to the slab being poured. This allowed the client to check the existing conditions for any irregularities.

Location: Houston, Texas Task: The client was in active build of an eight-story apartment complex in Houston, Texas. Challenge: The client was on a strict timeline and did not want delays in construction. They needed to quickly and accurate ensure that everything was in its correct location prior to pouring the slab. The client needed a 3D laser scanning company who could quickly mobilize to the site, conduct efficient laser scanning and provide point cloud data aligned to the design drawings within 24-48 hours. Solution: GPRS worked closely with the client. The scan technician mobilized to the site 1-2 times a week for 8 months and quickly captured the data without stalling the construction process. The scan technician set up the laser scanner at multiple locations around each slab and captured the data without disturbing the active construction site. GPRS’ team of in-house engineers quickly provided the point cloud alignment. The sub-centimeter point cloud data allowed the client to review the site conditions and make changes prior to the scheduled pour and without ever having to leave the office. Deliverable: GPRS’ Project Manager laser scanned each area and provided a colorized point cloud to the client. The colorized point cloud allowed the client to see color imagery, stitched over the point cloud to assess the area for misplaced sleeves, conduits and post-tension runs. This data was also aligned to the existing building plans to quickly find any issues. Added Value: The client relayed that GPRS saved them thousands of the dollars with just the first mobilization. They identified issues with the sleeve alignment from the home office and had them corrected prior to the slab being poured. Finding out that the sleeves were not in the correct location, even the day after the pour, would have cost the general contractor tens of thousands of dollars in coring costs alone. And if this problem would not have been discovered until framing and other elements went up could have cost exponentially more. GPRS’ nationwide team of scan technicians that can mobilize to any site quickly. Our experience and long-term client commitment make us a great partner for your 3D laser scanning needs. 3D high-definition surveying has proven to be a quick, accurate, and versatile tool for architects, engineers, BIM managers, general contractors, and construction managers. It is ideal for adaptive reuse or renovation projects. In this case, GPRS provided the client with invaluable information that allowed them to assess the site from their office before the concrete slab was poured. The deliverables provided will be an asset for years to come as they can be referenced for any future coring or drilling needs showing where everything embedded in the slab was prior to pouring.
