Water Treatment Plant Expansion Utilizes 3D Laser Scanning Point Cloud Data

Raw point cloud data provided an engineering firm in California the accurate measurements they needed to design and plan the expansion of a water treatment facility in Texas thanks to 3D laser scanning
Capture accurate existing conditions and provide raw as-built, point cloud data for the expansion of a water treatment plant
An engineering firm was generating construction drawings to expand an existing water treatment plant. The firm required accurate field conditions in raw point cloud data (.rcp files and related supporting files) to create new layouts for construction.
No as-built drawings existed for the water treatment plant. Accurate existing conditions were needed to plan for the facility expansion • Exact dimensions were required to plan modifications and fabricate pipe • The project's engineering firm was located in California; the water treatment plant was located in Texas. They needed accurate information available in a digital platform to begin design planning Solution • Using a Leica Scan Station, a GPRS Project Manager completed 40 laser scans of the building to capture architectural, structural, and MEP features • The client received a colorized point cloud in ReCap (.rcp files and related supporting files) and TruView files that allowed the engineering firm and the plant to coordinate off-site planning and prefabrication for the expansion Benefits Laser scanning is an extremely efficient and accurate way to gather data necessary to create construction drawings of a building or space. • 3D laser scanning eliminated the firm's travel to the Water Treatment Plant. In one day on site, enough scans were taken to create a complete colorized point cloud of the space. • 3D laser scan data provided the Engineering Firm critical tie points on tanks and lines, information that was crucial to the expansion.

Power Plant Renovations Require 3D Laser Scanning

In just one day on site, GPRS was able to capture the entire existing condition of the facility, even in dense pipe runs and hard-to-reach spaces, with 2-4mm accuracy to provide the client with an accurate 3D BIM model for planning, fabrication, and clash detection
An engineering firm needed to have existing conditions of a power plant documented and modeled to plan for renovations.
An engineering firm needed to have existing conditions of a power plant documented and modeled to plan for renovations.
Problem • The client needed to accurately document the existing conditions of the plant without interruptions to the power supply • Many of the pipe runs were dense and impossible to accurately measure by hand • The client required 2-4 mm accuracy of dense piping and pipe runs throughout the facility • The client needed to guarantee that installations complied with safety regulations Solution • In one day on site, GPRS' Project Manager used the Leica RTC360 laser scanner to capture 150 laser scans, documenting existing conditions of the facility • Many of the pipe runs were dense and impossible to accurately measure by hand • GPRS generated a 3D BIM model for use in CAD software, including all civil, structural, electrical, and mechanical features, piping, and conduit 1" and larger Benefits • Due to the vast space and density of the piping, it would have been much more difficult and time consuming to accurately depict the location of pipe runs, structural features, and other details in the plant manually • The point cloud data from laser scanning was used by CAD technicians to create an intelligent 3D BIM model for planning, fabrication and clash detection • Verified measurements and virtual planning guarantee installations will comply with safety regulations • Using virtual 3D models, the firm can plan and model future developments to manage the facility without having to re-enter the site

3D Laser Scanning Services Used for Manufacturing Facility Expansion

The client was making a large investment in capital and equipment and needed reliable as-built data and a 3D BIM model to expedite the installation without rework.
A pet nutrition manufacturer was expanding its facility to increase the production of current products and add an additional packaging line. The 30-year-old company planned to invest $17.5 million in this expansion. GPRS conducted an as-built site survey and created a 3D BIM model for the facility expansion. We captured approximately 50,000 square feet of the dry mixing facility spanning 5 levels, including a meat slurry room, a batching area, an extruder room, a hammermill room, and several mechanical and electrical rooms. Precise point cloud data was captured for all architectural and structural features, equipment, conduit, and piping.

3D Laser Scanning Services Used for Manufacturing Facility Expansion Project Manager Insight: Our client planned this manufacturing facility expansion in two phases. The first phase will expand production from five to seven days a week. The second phase will add an additional packaging line. -- Karl Hofmeister, TruePoint Project Manager Location: Richmond, Indiana Task: A pet nutrition manufacturer was expanding its facility to increase the production of current products and add an additional packaging line. The 30-year-old company planned to invest $17.5 million in this expansion. TruePoint Laser Scanning conducted an as-built site survey and created a 3D BIM model for the facility expansion. TruePoint captured approximately 50,000 square feet of the dry mixing facility spanning 5 levels, including a meat slurry room, a batching area, an extruder room, a hammermill room and several mechanical and electrical rooms. TruePoint captured precise point cloud data of all architectural and structural features, equipment, conduit and piping. Challenge: No as built plans existed for the facility. The plant was complex, capturing the existing spatial data of the machinery, conduit and piping in a high level of detail was important to the plant engineers. There were many silos and machinery that needed to be worked around and could obstruct the view. The client was making a large investment in capital and equipment and needed reliable data to expedite the installation without rework. Solution: In two days on site, TruePoint’s experienced project managers 3D laser scanned the manufacturing facility with the Leica P50, Leica P40 and RTC 360 laser scanners. TruePoint’s in-house modeling team built an information-rich 3D BIM model for the client. Deliverable: The deliverables created for this project included an intensity map Autodesk Recap point cloud (.rcs file), LGS/JetStream Viewer files and a Revit 2019 LOD 300 3D model. The information-rich 3D model included: Basic structural elements including exposed columns, beams and structural bracing. Basic architectural elements including walls, doors, windows, floors and ceilings. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing piping 2" in diameter and above, showing valves on all pipes that were 2" and larger. Conduit runs were modeled as solid blocks. MEP Equipment including pumps, electrical boxes, silos and HVAC ductwork. Added Value: TruePoint 3D laser scanned another facility for this client earlier this year. We were contacted to provide accurate site data to plan for this facility expansion. By using laser scanning instead of traditional survey methods, TruePoint saved this client thousands of dollars in field survey work and drafting time, and provided greater detail than what would have otherwise been possible. With an accurate, comprehensive data set, plant engineers could install the new equipment and packaging line.
