Laser Scanning Expedites Airport Renovations

GPRS provided 3D laser scanning services for John Glenn International Airport in Columbus, Ohio. The client was upgrading the existing airport entrance. Renovations included the installation of a prefabricated ceiling panel system and new doors. The primary objective of the laser scan was to capture the ground, curbs, ceiling beams, and related structural features to design and prefabricate the upgrades.

John Glenn International Airport – Columbus, Ohio Airport Entrance Upgrades Requires 3D Laser Scanning ‍ TASK: GPRS provided 3D laser scanning services for John Glenn International Airport in Columbus, Ohio. The client was upgrading the existing airport entrance. Renovations included the installation of a prefabricated ceiling panel system and new doors. The primary objective of the laser scan was to capture the ground, curbs, ceiling beams, and related structural features to design and prefabricate the upgrades. ‍ CHALLENGE: The client had a 60-day window to complete renovations, and no in-house engineers. The airport entrance did not match the architectural drawing; the ceiling structure was sloped where the drawings showed it level, and differing beam heights and widths between two levels of the airport created additional challenges. They needed accurate as builts to tie the upgrades to the existing structure and align with the camber of the structure. The client also had to deliver precise measurements to the ceiling panel system prefabricator and to provide the builders of the custom doors precise measurements on entryways. This would minimize any assumptions that could lead to field changes and schedule delays during construction. ‍ SOLUTION: The airport, which serves 7 million annual travelers, needed to remain in operation with little to no interruption of services. So, 3D laser scanning was completed at night during low passenger activity periods, so the airport could remain in operation. The GPRS Mapping & Modeling Team worked closely with the client to create maps and models to expedite components and minimize inaccuracies. 2D CAD drawings, and a 3D BIM model were delivered, which eliminated field adjustments and delays during renovations. The laser scan data also helped the client to plan how the new entrance would tie into the existing entrance, while taking into account all of the field variables.

GPRS Provides Point Cloud and 3D Mesh of Trees

GPRS 3D laser scanned three 100-year old trees and provided the client with intensity map point cloud files and a 3D mesh of the trees to include them in the design plan.
The client desired to laser scan three 100-year old trees and include them in the design plans for a new housing development. GPRS 3D laser scanned the trees and provided the client with intensity map point cloud files and a 3D mesh of the trees. This was GPRS’ second phase of laser scanning for this client.

Caption: GPRS provided the client with the intensity map point cloud files and 3D mesh of the trees. Location: Austin, Texas Task: The client desired to laser scan three 100-year old trees and include them in the design plans for a new development. GPRS 3D laser scanned the trees and provided the client with intensity map point cloud files and a 3D mesh of the trees for reality capture. This was GPRS’ second phase of laser scanning for this client. Challenge: The client could not accurately capture the location, exact dimensions and detail of the three trees. They needed laser scanning services to include the trees in the design plan. It was important to capture the existing conditions without damaging the tree trunks or limbs. Solutions: GPRS’ Texas office used a Leica C10 ScanStation to capture the three trees and the surrounding area. Accurate 3D measurements were captured in a few hours on site in a fast and environmentally friendly manner. Laser scanners are non-contact, they scan from tripods on the ground up to 300 yards, keeping the environment untouched. Deliverables: GPRS provided the client with intensity map point cloud files and 3D mesh of the trees. This can be pulled into an existing Revit or AutoCAD model and aligned with the design plan, as well as be used in reality capture software. Added Value: GPRS incorporated the first and second mobilization into the same coordinate system which allowed the separate projects to be put on the same coordinates and relate the projects to one another even though they were captured at different times. This allowed the client to create their design model more accurately and preserve the 100-year-old trees. 3D information is invariant to lighting and shadow. As a result, significantly more data was acquired by laser scanning the tree, and much more accurately than hand measuring. Laser scanning services are the solution for capturing spatial data in a fast, efficient and highly accurate way.

Oil Tank 3D Laser Scan

For oil tank replacement, the true shape and condition of the tank can be critical for ensuring that the new design fits the existing conditions; reducing costly delays or rework.
GPRS provided terrestrial-based 3D laser scanning services for a 25' x 25' x 30' oil tank near Topeka, Kansas. The objective was to capture the existing conditions of the tank, piping, flanges, nozzles, structural steel, pipe supports, and grade.

3D laser scanning by GPRS for an oil tank replacement. Case Study: Oil Tank 3D Laser Scan Location: Emporia, Kansas TASK: GPRS provided terrestrial-based 3D laser scanning services for a 25' x 25' x 30' oil tank near Topeka, Kansas. The objective was to capture the existing conditions of the tank, piping, flanges, nozzles, structural steel, pipe supports and grade. PROBLEM: The client was upgrading the oil tank and needed 3D laser scanning to plan for the removal and replacement. For tank replacement, the true shape and condition of the tank can be critical for ensuring that the new design fits the existing conditions; hence reducing costly delays or rework. All piping, nozzles and structural steel around the tank was reality-captured so the new tank could be designed with proper fit and without interruptions to the unit. SOLUTION: 3D laser scanning provides a way to quickly and accurately obtain the existing condition information. The exact dimensions of a tank can easily be determined to ensure that fabrications match the existing structure. In less than 5 hours on site, the GPRS Project Manager captured the as built conditions of the existing tank and nozzles. Once the point cloud was registered, GPRS Mapping & Modeling CAD technicians delivered the point cloud data for the client to incorporate into their design model. GPRS delivered Intensity Map Point Cloud files, RCS Files and PTG Files to the client. BENEFITS: GPRS uses Leica Laser scanners, which can also capture images to further enhance the collected data. These images, called TruViews, were provided to the client and offer factual record of the areas inspected. GPRS is an experienced 3D laser scanning company. Our knowledgeable Project Managers confidently scan complex jobs with extreme safety requirements. For this job, the technician used an intrinsically safe laser scanner, since any spark would cause an explosion for this particular tank farm. Delivering the point cloud data gives the client the ability to do clash detection for interferences, saving them time and money in the field.
