GPRS 3D laser scanned the exterior elevation, basement, main lobby level, 2nd floor and elevator shaft – more than 30,000 square feet of space. All structural and architectural features were captured as part of the scan.

Case Study: 3D Laser Scanning Aids In Hotel Renovation Location: Toledo, Ohio TASK: A hotel developer plans to invest $30 million to renovate a 200-room hotel in downtown Toledo, Ohio. GPRS performed laser scanning services to aid this client in the renovation. GPRS 3D laser scanned the exterior elevation, basement, main lobby level, 2nd floor and elevator shaft – more than 30,000 square feet of space. All structural and architectural features were captured as part of the scan. PROBLEM: No accurate as-built drawings existed. It would have been difficult, costly and time consuming to manually measure the 19-story building. The developer was not local, making transportation and lodging an added expense. Safety was also a concern, as the building was partially demolished and contained asbestos. SOLUTION: GPRS quickly mobilized to the site and captured the existing conditions of the hotel. Using a P40 survey-grade Leica ScanStation, the local GPRS Project Manager tied the data to survey control, achieved 2-4mm accuracy, and mitigated movement, ensuring level scans. The client received .rcs Intensity Map Point Cloud files, 2D AutoCAD Floor Plans, 2D Point Cloud Sheets, a 3D Revit 2017 LOD 100 Model and TruViews. To save costs and expedite this project, only the unique floors of the hotel were laser scanned. Capturing the basic structural and architectural features will immensely help the architect in planning the hotel renovations. Laser scanning quickly captured precise data while avoiding the risk of the unsafe environment. The client was making a large investment in capital and equipment and needed reliable as-built data and a 3D BIM model to expedite the installation without rework.
A pet nutrition manufacturer was expanding its facility to increase the production of current products and add an additional packaging line. The 30-year-old company planned to invest $17.5 million in this expansion. GPRS conducted an as-built site survey and created a 3D BIM model for the facility expansion. We captured approximately 50,000 square feet of the dry mixing facility spanning 5 levels, including a meat slurry room, a batching area, an extruder room, a hammermill room, and several mechanical and electrical rooms. Precise point cloud data was captured for all architectural and structural features, equipment, conduit, and piping.

The 30-year-old company planned to invest $17.5 million in this expansion. TruePoint Laser Scanning conducted an as-built site survey and created a 3D BIM model for the facility expansion. TruePoint captured approximately 50,000 square feet of the dry mixing facility spanning 5 levels, including a meat slurry room, a batching area, an extruder room, a hammermill room and several mechanical and electrical rooms. TruePoint captured precise point cloud data of all architectural and structural features, equipment, conduit and piping. Challenge: No as built plans existed for the facility. The plant was complex, capturing the existing spatial data of the machinery, conduit and piping in a high level of detail was important to the plant engineers. There were many silos and machinery that needed to be worked around and could obstruct the view. The client was making a large investment in capital and equipment and needed reliable data to expedite the installation without rework. Solution: In two days on site, TruePoint’s experienced project managers 3D laser scanned the manufacturing facility with the Leica P50, Leica P40 and RTC 360 laser scanners. TruePoint’s in-house modeling team built an information-rich 3D BIM model for the client. Deliverable: The deliverables created for this project included an intensity map Autodesk Recap point cloud (.rcs file), LGS/JetStream Viewer files and a Revit 2019 LOD 300 3D model. The information-rich 3D model included: Basic structural elements including exposed columns, beams and structural bracing. Basic architectural elements including walls, doors, windows, floors and ceilings. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing piping 2" in diameter and above, showing valves on all pipes that were 2" and larger. Conduit runs were modeled as solid blocks. MEP Equipment including pumps, electrical boxes, silos and HVAC ductwork. Added Value: TruePoint 3D laser scanned another facility for this client earlier this year. We were contacted to provide accurate site data to plan for this facility expansion. By using laser scanning instead of traditional survey methods, TruePoint saved this client thousands of dollars in field survey work and drafting time, and provided greater detail than what would have otherwise been possible. LiDAR Survey Dimensions of a 6-Story Building

GPRS’ accurate measurements allowed the client to order dimensionally-correct windows for each specific opening, thus reducing any change orders for this project. The client can review the 6-story building and its openings in 3 separate deliverables: the point cloud, the 2D drawings, and the TruViews.

Location: Detroit, Michigan Task: To capture the dimensions of all the window openings on the building. Challenge: The building was a 6-story building with windows on all four sides. The height alone of a 6-story building can create enough challenges when obtaining accurate measurements of window dimensions. This project, however, presented additional challenges. For example, the exterior of the building was not easily accessible by lift or scaffolding due to its being located along a busy road with minimal right of way. Additionally, the other sides of the building also had obstacles which further limited access to the windows. Solutions: By utilizing laser scanning, a non-contact measurement tool, GPRS was able to capture the accurate dimensions of the window openings safely from the ground, as well as from other safe locations. Windowsills can sometimes be difficult to capture when scanning from the ground, but our scan technicians were able to set up on and scan from surrounding buildings and rooftops to ensure enough elevation to capture these features accurately for our client. And since laser scanning is not only safe and accurate, but also is extremely fast, the field work was limited to one day. Deliverable: GPRS provided our client with 2D elevations in AutoCAD, which included the dimensions of the edge of existing rough openings dictated by the limestone cladding. Additionally, we supplied our client with TruViews – 3D photographs overlaid on top of the point cloud, allowing for rudimentary measurements directly from the photos. The client can now view the building and its openings in 3 separate deliverables: the point cloud, the 2D drawings, and the TruViews. Added Value: Many times, in field measuring, there is an assumption made, after measuring several similar units, that others will likely be of the same dimensions. With laser scanning we can easily and accurately determine the dimensions of each opening individually. As is common with many older buildings, many of the openings of this building appeared to be the same size but, in fact, varied enough to cause potential problems. GPRS’ accurate measurements allowed the client to order dimensionally-correct windows for each specific opening, thus reducing any change orders for windows that did not fit perfectly the first time they were placed.
