3D Laser Scan Corporate Office HVAC and Mechanical Systems

With 3D laser scan data, the client can accurately verify the existing HVAC and mechanical equipment within the building without having to worry about positioning or measurement error. This helps them to design their new systems more accurately and efficiently.‍
3D scanning services were performed for a 10-story office building, capturing existing above-ceiling interstitial HVAC systems on each floor, as well as mechanical rooms, chiller rooms, air handling unit rooms and a basement tunnel connecting the utility area to the office building. Over 240,000 square foot of space was laser scanned to document the as-is conditions. The client was upgrading the HVAC system and GPRS developed a 3D model to aid the design process and reduce clashes.

Location: Toledo, Ohio Task: 3D scanning services were performed for a 10-story office building, capturing existing above-ceiling interstitial HVAC systems on each floor, as well as mechanical rooms, chiller rooms, air handling unit rooms and a basement tunnel connecting the utility area to the office building. Over 240,000 square foot of space was laser scanned to document the as-is conditions. The client was upgrading the HVAC system and GPRS developed a 3D model to aid the design process and reduce clashes. Challenge: With the site being an active office building, it was critical that the required lidar scanning data was obtained with minimal interruptions. Accuracy was important and the space was vast, they needed complete documentation to plan for system upgrades, including above the acoustic tile that was to remain in place. Solutions: Using the RTC360 and P40 Leica 3D laser scanners, GPRS Project Managers 3D laser scanned the interstitial and mechanical space in the evenings to avoid interrupting the office workday. A laser scanner mounted to a tripod was extended above the ceiling tiles to capture the interstitial space. With the 3D laser scan data, the client can accurately verify the existing HVAC and mechanical equipment within the building without having to worry about positioning or measurement error. This enables them to design their new systems more accurately and efficiently. Deliverable: GPRS delivered point cloud data in .rcs file format usable in Autodesk products (Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, etc.) so the client can align and overlay the point cloud to their existing 3D Revit model to verify the location of large format ductwork located in the interstitial space. GPRS also provided a 3D model of the mechanical rooms, chiller rooms, air handling unit rooms and basement tunnel. An LOD 100 model of the structural space and an LOD 300 of the MEP space was delivered to the client. Added Value: GPRS customizes deliverables for each client, so they are only paying for what they need. Also, upon completion of the HVAC system upgrade and prior to ceiling tiles being installed, GPRS will re-mobilize to the site to capture the new as-built conditions of the space for future reference.

3D Laser Scanning a Spiral Staircase

GPRS provided laser scanning services to capture data from a staircase and railings to generate a 3D model in STP file format. The target objects of acquisition were the staircase features including treads, rails and rail hangers. The 3D model was needed to create custom drawings to prefabricate an irregular railing.

Location: New York, NY Task: GPRS provided laser scanning services to capture data from a staircase and railings to generate a 3D model in STP file format. The target objects of acquisition were the staircase features including treads, rails and rail hangers. The 3D model was needed to create custom drawings to prefabricate an irregular railing. Challenge: It was difficult for the client to accurately make three-dimensional measurements of staircase and railing using conventional tools. Manually trying to take enough measurements in the X, Y, Z axis to comprehensively and accurately model the unique shape and contours would have been tedious and nearly impossible. Solutions: High resolution point cloud data was collected by an experienced scan technician in 20 scan locations and four hours on site. Accurate measurements of all parts of the stairway, including the whole step surface, balustrade, handrails and adjacent floor and wall surfaces were quickly captured. Deliverable: GPRS’ in-house engineers delivered intensity map point cloud files, 3D model in STP file format and TruView’s (3D photographs overlaid on top of the point cloud data) to the client.Added Value: The GPRS scan technician was met on site by an Italian-based design firm to discuss using the 3D model to generate design specs. In this case, the client was interested in dimensions of the railing for fabrication. 3D laser scanning generates point cloud data and engineers can summarize the data into a 3D model. Every dimension on the staircase can be determined quickly and accurately. Another benefit of laser scanning includes being able to immerse a viewer in the virtual scene without the need for a site visit. 3D laser scanning is a powerful tool for capturing measurements where precision and accuracy are critical.

3D Laser Scanning Michigan Power Plant

GPRS provided 3D laser scanning and modeling services for a power plant in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which generates and processes four main services: steam, electricity, compressed air and domestic hot water. The objective was to as-built survey the 5-level building, basement, exterior facades, rooftop areas, electrical switch gear rooms, vaults and interstitial space below the control room. GPRS generated a 3D model in Bentley Microstation for the client’s use. The model included all civil, structural, electrical and mechanical features, including piping and conduits ½" in diameter and larger

Challenge: The client needed to accurately document existing conditions. Due to the vast space and density of piping, it would have been much more difficult and time consuming to accurately depict the location of pipe runs, structural features and other details in the plant manually. It would have also been difficult and unsafe to capture overhead and structural features without the use of a lift. Solutions: Utilizing several scan technicians and multiple Leica laser scanners, including the Leica P-40, P-20, and C-10 ScanStation, GPRS was able to occupy existing plant benchmarks and orient the data to survey control. GPRS’ scan technicians captured full color panoramic photographs at each scan location with the on-board camera. GPRS completed over 1,200 individual scans for this project due to the density of the piping. Deliverables: GPRS’ team of in-house CAD technicians provided Microstation POD files, full-color TruViews and a Bentley Microstation V8i 3D model. Added Value: GPRS communicated directly with on-site personnel at the power plant and participated in daily work briefings to ensure compliance with plant safety protocol. Additionally, GPRS’ CAD technician visited the site with the scan technician, utilizing cutting edge methods to conduct in-field verification and quality assurance review of the 3D model on tablets in real time using both virtual reality and augmented reality methods.
