GPRS Training Slab

GPRS Training Slab

A key feature of the GPRS Training Program is the ability to gain hands-on experience, both in the field and in a simulated setting. At the GPRS Training Facility in our Ohio headquarters we have a state-of-the-art slab designed to mimic all conditions commonly found on sites. This ~1000 SF slab was designed especially to enable trainees to gain experience while in a classroom setting.

Within the slab there is:

  • Rebar
  • Post-tension cables
  • Conduits running to junction boxes
  • Electrical wiring- some of which is live
  • Heating and hot water tubes
  • Stud rails

The slab varies in thickness from 4” on grade to a 12” portion created to simulate a beam. Part of the slab is poured over lightweight foam to create a fake air pocket- copying conditions found when scanning a ceiling or wall.

During our new hire training students spend a full day using the slab to familiarize themselves with the concrete scanning process. Most new hires are unfamiliar with concrete scanning and utility locating, which is why it’s so important for them to gain experience before going out on their own. Trainees are able to practice scanning and marking out the concrete for activities such as core drilling. They receive individualized mentoring to determine which areas they need additional work on, as well as in-depth construction knowledge to help prepare them for situations they will encounter in the field.

Different portions of the slab are considered to be of varying degrees of difficulty for someone performing scanning work. New students gain knowledge and confidence on the easier parts of the slab, and are able to return for additional training on the more difficult scans after spending time in the field.

Other scanning and locating companies train students using small poured sections for training. Our 18 years of experience have taught us that the best experience comes from exposure and hands-on training, which is why we created this unique experience to give our employees an advantage when it comes to GPR scanning.
