GPRS utilizes a rigorous set of processes and complementary technologies to locate and map underground utilities. The process we use is known as Subsurface Investigation Methodology (SIM) and it is the backbone of our 99.8% accuracy rate in utility locating. Our Project Managers utilize ground penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic (EM) locators, and a set of precise, standardized procedures to deliver accurate, field‑verified information on the location and depth of underground utilities. We mark-out utilities on the surface with spray paint and/or flags, plus map the area utilizing Real-Time Kinematic Positioning, the most accurate satellite geospatial technology available. We deliver complimentary PDF and KMZ files, plus interactive digital utility maps, through SiteMap®, our GIS software platform and mobile app.
Utility locating costs vary by project because each site has unique conditions and risks. GPRS provides upfront, project-specific utility locating pricing based on factors such as soil conditions, site size, utility depth, utility density, required level of detail, working hours, and deliverables. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all rate, GPRS tailors each quote to your exact scope so you only pay for what you need. Accurate, professional utility locating helps prevent strikes, delays, and emergency repairs that can far exceed the cost of our service.
A GPRS utility locate can include clear field markings, flags, and digital documentation of located utilities. All GPRS outdoor utility locates include complimentary PDF and KMZ utility maps, and we can also capture depths where available, along with georeferenced utility data. You can securely access all files, plus color-coded, interactive layered utility maps via the SiteMap® GIS platform and mobile app.
GPRS uses RTK positioning because it provides significantly more precise location data than standard GPS. Standard GPS has a 2-8 ft. variance, while RTK can improve positioning to within inches by applying real-time corrections to GNSS data. GPRS uses RTK-enabled GNSS devices in the field and can combine RTK data with photogrammetry, 3D laser scanning, utility locating, and video pipe inspections to give contractors and facility teams a more accurate picture of existing conditions.
Yes. We monitor our strike rate nationwide and have maintained a consistent 99.8%+ accuracy rate in utility locating and concrete scanning since 2017. What sets our accuracy rate apart is Subsurface Investigation Methodology, or SIM. SIM requires approximately ten times the industry standard for training and education (80 hours of classroom and hands-on instruction plus 320 hours of mentored field training), which is why all GPRS Project Managers are required to be SIM-certified. The SIM process requires expertise in the use of multiple complementary technologies, and accurate, standardized field reporting.
