3D GPR Array Additions Are Expected to Streamline Right-of-Ways & Roadway Utility Locating

GPRS has expanded its subsurface data capture abilities to include high-speed 3D ground penetrating radar arrays. The 18-antenna units are able to accurately locate and map underground utilities with extreme precision, even when traveling at speeds as fast as 80 mph.

A screenshot depicting a map of utilities underneath a roadway. The roadway is shown in deep green, the 3D GPR imaging is lighter green and yellow, and is overlaid with red lines and white map points depicting utility lines.
The data collected by the high-speed array can accurately map utilities under roadways, in right-of-ways, and over large areas in minutes.
“These arrays allow us to efficiently collect GPR roadway data for very large scopes at highway speeds anywhere in the country without the need for traffic control or road closures,” said Jamie Althauser, GPRS Sr. Vice President of Field Support in the company’s announcement about the new technology.

The potential applications for the arrays are “nearly infinite,” and could include, among others:

  • New utility installations
  • Subsurface facility installations
  • Infrastructure improvements
  • Safer directional drilling fiberoptic installations
  • Sanitary & storm sewer mapping
