Founder & CEO Aston Shares the Secrets of GPRS’ Success on People-First Builders Podcast

Fletcher Wimbush recently welcomed GPRS’ founder & CEO Matt Aston on his People-First Builders Podcast for an episode he titled, “Measure Twice, Hire Right: Building Accountability into Growth.”

In the 50-minute episode, Aston shared how building a culture of accountability and innovation with a focus on hiring exceptional people has kept GPRS at the cutting edge of damage prevention and visualization for the AEC and related industries for nearly 25 years.

“You cannot have an exceptional business if you don’t have exceptional people,” he said.

He also shared with Wimbush how he failed when he was just getting started, and how that led him to train himself to be better. “I performed poorly on three of the first four jobs I executed.”

Since ground penetrating radar was a new and largely untested technology 25 years ago, he had to become an expert, fast. He said that one of the toughest things in the first few years was building awareness, “getting people to give new technology a chance.”

Giving new technology a chance could be considered a significant part of GPRS’ continuing success, along with refusing to compromise on the quality of people hired into the company. Since its start in 2001, GPRS has consistently innovated, now bringing far more to the table than GPR, with a suite of professional visualization, existing condition capture & documentation solutions that is unrivaled in the industry. And just like Aston needed to become an expert 25 years ago in one new technology, he expects nothing less from his team, and has developed the most rigorous training program available to ensure every GPRS Field Team member is an “elite performer.”

The company now boasts over 900 team members, with Project Managers in every major U.S. market, and continues to grow, in Aston’s opinion because they have learned the hard way that hiring the right people, matters.

“We hire character. We teach skill.”
