Task

Locate utilities within a designated 10,000 s.f. project area inside a pipeline compressor station where two large pieces of equipment were to be installed

PROBLEM

  • The customer was originally looking to just have a single, buried plastic water line located within the project area prior to the installation of two large pieces of equipment
  • After an initial discussion with their GPRS Project Manager, the scope of work expanded to include all possible buried utilities in the 10,000 s.f. area
  • The client’s existing as-built drawings showed a second water line in the area

Solution

  • A GPRS Project Manager was able to use ground penetrating radar (GPR) to locate and map the tracer wire connected to the plastic water line, as well as an electrical ground line
  • It was discovered that the water line runs under the planned location for the heavy equipment
  • The Project Manager found no evidence of a second water line, suggesting the client’s as-built documentation is inaccurate

Benefits

  • The client can safely excavate to move the buried water line, or shift where they plan to install the heavy equipment based on the accurate utility locate data provided by GPRS
  • The compressor station’s as-builts can be updated to reflect the location of the buried utilities, preventing damage to these lines during any future projects
