PROJECT APPLICATION
ASK
Task
Scan the interior and exterior of the infamous Blackburn Lab building located on the abandoned St. Elizabeth Hospital’s campus in Washington, D.C.
PROBLEM
- Bell Architects needed updated existing conditions documentation of the building
- The firm needed to move the structure 65 feet from its current location to make way for an ongoing street extension
- Up-to-date documentation could assist their project by providing insights into the building’s structural integrity
- The site is registered as a historic landmark so updated as-builts would provide key insights on how to execute the job safely and efficiently
Solution
- GPRS Project Managers spent three days scanning every inch of the 22,520 square foot space with LiDAR-based 3D laser scanners
- The PMs used control points to ensure each scan could form one coherent model
- GPRS’ in-house Mapping & Modeling Team used the 2-4mm accurate point cloud data to create a suite of deliverables for the client, which included a 3D Revit model with CAD export, floor plans, exterior elevation plans, and reflected ceiling plans.
Benefits
- The firm could now properly assess and plan out the relocation with highly precise models and plans within arm’s reach
- They also can analyze the building’s structural integrity to ensure they don’t cause irreparable damage to the historic landmark during relocation or any other projects in the future
