Task
Conduct 3D laser scans of a prestigious university’s advanced medical research facility and use the data to create accurate as-built documents and other deliverables for construction planning purposes
PROBLEM
- A prestigious university was planning renovations to its 20-year-old advanced medical research facility
- The school did not have accurate as-built documents for the building
- Any data collection within the building needed to be conducted after hours, so as not to disrupt operations and so that equipment like MRI machines could be turned off
Solution
- GPRS deployed the Leica RTC360 and NavVis VLX 3D laser scanners to capture 2-4mm accurate existing conditions documentation of the research facility’s interior, including MEP features within the drop-down ceilings
- The Project Managers worked after hours to capture the accurate data without disrupting the facility’s operations
- GPRS’ in-house Mapping & Modeling Team used the data collected by the Project Managers to create a 3D Revit model, floor plans, a roof plan, a TruView Virtual Site Visit, exterior elevations, and reflected ceiling plans (RCPs)
Benefits
- The school’s partners were able to effectively plan the renovations to the facility
- The medical research inside the building was not disrupted during data capture
- The accurate deliverables will help mitigate the risk of clashes, reworks, and other mistakes typically caused by inaccurate data
