PROBLEM
- Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) was selected to design The Roy and Diana Vagelos Innovation Laboratories, a new eight-story all-electric facility for biomedical research and laboratory use
- The building needed to meet NYC’s Local Law 97 requirements and Columbia University’s 2030 greenhouse gas reduction goals
- The plan includes connecting the School of Nursing and the Russ Berrie Medical Science Pavilion, so accurate as-built documentation for both structures is vital
Solution
- GPRS Project Managers used LiDAR-based 3D laser scanners to capture approximately 75,000 s.f. of the two interconnected buildings in greyscale
- They documented the interior and exterior of the Russ Berrie Medical Science Pavilion
- They also captured the School of Nursing's interior side of the exterior wall facing the parking lot
- GPRS in-house Mapping & Modeling Team used the registered point cloud data to create a 3D BIM model, floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, exterior elevations, MEP documentation, and a roof plan

- The as-built deliverables provided an accurate foundation for the design team to plan the renovation and expansion
- 3D laser scanning was quick, safe, non-intrusive, and allowed the medical center to remain fully operational
