Plastic Gas Line Locating on Private Property - Southlands, British Columbia

GPRS Enterprises Inc. of British Columbia was called out to provide a utility location survey at a private ranch in Southlands, BC. Although the gas line in question had a built-in tracer wire, the homeowner was concerned that the wire had had been damaged at one point. Therefore, the homeowner wanted to pinpoint the location of this utility prior to proceeding with some excavation work.

After receiving the call from the customer, GPRS mobilized to the job site the next day at 8am. After arriving at the property, we determined that the gas line had been dug up at the edge of the property, and the tracer wire was exposed. The first step in locating the line was to use our RD7100 transmitter and receiver to test for the presence of a tracer wire. The transmitter was grounded on the negative side with a grounding spike, and the positive side was attached to the tracer wire. A 33MHz frequency was chosen, and induced onto the gas line tracer wire. Using the receiver, we were able to accurately locate this line all of the way up to the gas meter at the house. This test proved that the tracer wire was functioning correctly, and of course, this scan provided us with the location of the gas line as well. This small project only took us 10 minutes to complete.

The photo above shows the gas line in question (highlighted with the yellow arrow). You can also see the transmitter and receiver (highlighted with red arrows). This was a very straightforward utility locate, and because of this, we were able to save the customer time and money. We were able to provide the customer with a discount on the project so that they could keep their costs low. In addition to providing markings onto the surface, a deliverable in the form of a Google Earth drawing was also provided at the end of the scan. Not only will this drawing be very useful as the customer completes their project, this drawing will also allow the homeowner to have a permanent record of the location of the gas line, and this information will come in handy for future projects at this location.

The utility map (shown above) is an example of a simple red line drawing that can be provided to contractors after we complete a scanning project. In addition to marking the depths and locations of utility lines onto the project surface, GPRS can also provide output maps ranging from something similar to what is shown in the image above, to Google Earth satellite image overlays, AutoCAD drawings, or simple hand sketches in the field. All of these different mapping options are tailored directly to the parameters of the project, and the needs of the client. GPRS is also happy to set up BC one call appointments prior to showing up to a job site. This allows us to provide a fully inclusive service, and to ensure that all of the utility lines under the surface of your job-site are located.
