Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. of Phoenix, AZ was contacted by a local electrical contractor to locate post tension reinforcement and conduit in a concrete slab over grade at a hotel in downtown Phoenix, AZ. The hotel had hired a previous electrical company who core drilled into the slab without investigating for post tension cable or conduit and consequently had hit a 480 volt power line. The damage was not reported by the previous contractor and resulted in a hotel fire a week later which required a full emergency evacuation of the hotel.

The new electrical contractor was given the difficult task of locating and repairing the conduit which was embedded into the post tension cable concrete slab while avoiding any further damage of electrical lines and post tension cables. GPRS, Inc. arrived on site to provide digital concrete imaging (Ground Penetrating Radar) for the contractor to safely locate all post tension cable and conduits within the slab to safely conduct proper repairs. GPRS was able to successfully locate and illustrate on site, the major power/conduit lines that were underneath the post tension cables within the slab. This gave an extremely clear visual, telling the contractor the essential information needed in order to safely access the conduit without damaging post tension cable.

Ground Penetrating Radar was ideal on this site as it was a facility that was open for business with many people on site working and staying in the hotel. GPR does not require evacuation of the area as does traditional x-ray concrete imaging. GPR emits no radiation and is completely safe to be around. Traditional x-ray is mostly done after hours whereas GPR can be done during normal business hours. All data findings are marked directly on the surface at the customer’s request for the easiest interpretation of the scanning provided. With GPR, there is no wait for developing film as with traditional x-ray.
