Private Utility Locate using GPR in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Ground Penetrating Radar Solutions - GPRS - of South Carolina was contacted by a general contractor to locate any utilities within 5’ of a proposed sign at a Wal-Mart in Spartanburg, SC. A 10’ x 10’ area was marked out and all utilities in the area were located and marked out with spray paint to allow the contractor to have options on sign placement as well as for the potential of an additional sign in the area. Most people will just call 811 or “PUPS” and rely on their mark out to avoid any issues but GPRS will confirm any utilities in the area as well as look for any private or unknown utilities with much better accuracy, usually within 1’. In this particular area, an unknown utility was found crossing through the area, without a private utility locate this line likely would have been struck with unknown cost, lost time, and injury.

GPRS is able to mark any findings in real time so that the general contractor can work directly with GPRS to solve problems and move the sign to a clear location. The contractor was able to install the sign safely with no underground obstructions thanks to GPRS.

Ground Penetrating Radar is a great tool to scan areas for locating underground utilities before drilling soil borings, digging, or excavating, as well as locating underground storage tanks or tank “graves”. GPR can also be used to scan concrete and locate rebar, post tension cables, and conduits, including PVC pipes. If you need anything scanned in South Carolina or anywhere else give us a call and we will have a SIM certified Project manager on your site as soon as possible.
