GPRS Investigates Parking Garage Prior To Solar Panels – Washington DC
Ground Penetrating Radar Systems was recently contracted to complete a concrete scan prior to the design of a massive solar power canopy at a commuter parking garage in Washington DC. The parking garage was required to stay active in order to continue to house the vehicles of the commuters working in our nation’s capital.
GPRS was tasked with not only scanning and marking out all subsurface anomalies including rebar and conduits, but also responsible for documenting the approximate rebar spacing and approximate depth of the rebar within the concrete slab in each area scanned. The requested data was vital because it played a significant role in the design of the anchor plates for the overhead solar canopy. The technologies used on this project included the standard locating equipment (GSSI 2GHz palm antenna and MiniXT concrete scanners), but also included a detailed written report including data tables, site photos and data screenshots of the areas scanned.
During the concrete investigation, the Washington DC based GPRS team scanned, located and marked out all subsurface anomalies within the designated areas indicated by the client. Per request of the client’s customer, GPRS was not permitted to place permanent markings on the garage surface. As an alternative, wax crayon was used to mark out the findings in each destinated area. Each feature, after being located by ground penetrating radar, was then given an approximate depth and an approximate measurement of the distance between each feature.
The image to the right shows the reinforcement steel marked out in a concrete column at the parking garage. An image was overlaid on the site photo showing the markings in order to effectively illustrate rebar placement and measurements on the detailed report given to the client.
In the image on the right, you can see GPRS project managers using the GSSI 2GHz palm antenna and the miniXT ground penetrating radar scanner. Our team was able to coordinate the scanning and data collection for all requested areas and manage the project through completion.
