GPRS Conducts Utility Locating at Mobile Home Park in Topeka, Kansas
Recently GPRS was hired by a local contractor to locate buried utilities at selected locations throughout a mobile home park. The contractor was soon to begin excavation at the selected locations and did not want to risk the chance of striking a buried utility. GPRS technicians were able to scan several locations throughout the course of the day marking out all locatable utilities. The picture above indicates the whereabouts of the gas (yellow) and water lines (blue) buried at one of the selected locations. The client will now be able to excavate safely around these buried utilities.
The process begins with the technician using the EM pipe locator to locate pipes or utilities throughout the scan area. First, the transmitter is used to connect to and trace any visible risers, tracer wires, or accessible, conductive utilities provided there is an exposed, metallic pipe or conduit. The areas are then swept with the receiver to detect live power or radio frequency signals. Locations and approximate depths are painted or flagged on the surface.
The next step is to collect initial GPR scans. The technician will begin scanning the selected area in a grid pattern to locate any unknown utilities not detected with the EM pipe locator. Data is gathered in real time and any anomalies found will be marked out on the surface using spray paint, flags, etc. The technician will then collect all marks and lines using GPS should the client choose to have that feature provided.
At GPRS safety is our top priority, not only for ourselves but for anyone else working at the site. Having utilities marked out prior to excavation will save the contractor time and money by avoiding delays in the project and not having to pay for costly repairs if a buried utility is struck during excavation. Most importantly, it will help protect the health and safety of anyone working in or around buried utilities that have been marked out. GPRS is the nation’s leading utility locators.
GPRS technicians are commonly called upon to locate a wide variety of items, such as, concrete scanning for rebar, conduits, post tension cables, and any other utility that may be buried. We also scan for private and public utilities, underground voids or vaults, footings, buried foundations, and Underground Storage Tanks (UST’s). All these tasks are all done in a safe, time efficient and non-destructive manner. The client can rest assured that they are hiring the best there is to handle their locating needs.
