The University of New Mexico needed to saw cut the concrete slab in the basement of the campus hospital. Brycon Corporation of Rio Rancho, NM was in charge of the site and needed to miss all electrical conduits when saw cutting through the concrete slab. Brycon called Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. of Albuquerque, New Mexico to ensure that no conduits were hit in the saw-cutting process.
GPRS of Albuquerque, New Mexico mobilized to the site and was able to map out the location of the conduits within the concrete slab on grade. The 8x8 area was scanned using GSSI Ground Penetrating Radar equipment. Located in the floor were two conduits that ran through the proposed saw cutting area. The area had to be modified so that the conduits were not struck by the saw. GPR was ideal for this job because there was only access to one side of the concrete slab. GPR is also frequently used in hospital settings because it does not use any sort of harmful radiation that would require moving patients or after hours work.
Jason Schaff runs GPRS operations in the Mountain Region of the United States. He is based in Albuquerque, NM and he can be reached at (505) 250-6742 or by email at jason.schaff@gp-radar.com. Concrete scanning for the purposes of identifying the location of conduits is a frequent service performed by the GPR technicians at GPRS.
