In May of 2008, K2N Crest Engineering out of Chicago, IL contacted Ground Penetrating Radar Systems Virginia Office for an upcoming project in Alexandria, Va. According to K2N an Xstreme Sports Fitness Facility was going to go into an existing building on King Street, however, the building was constructed with post-tension cables. The project design called two escalators to be placed in the center of the complex and K2N needed to know where the cables were located in the floor prior to cutting out these two large areas.
The project called for scanning an area of approximately 6600 square feet, on two separate floors, to plot out the cables in the floor to assist the engineers with planning. These items were then placed on a CAD drawing by GPRS, Inc. for the engineers. Regional Director, Jamey Harmon, was able to get to the site on the day requested and began scanning the floor.
During the scanning the cables were found to run in both directions through the floor and all the items were not only put onto a CAD drawing but they were also marked directly onto the surface with depths of each item found for the on-site project manager. Since Ground Penetrating Radar is done in real time there is no delay in the results and everything can be marked while the technician is on-site. Which saves your company time and money.
After all these items were marked onto the floor, K2N requested the on-site construction manager to chip out the concrete around in several of the locations to ensure they were Post-tension cables and to identify if they were single or double cables. If you look at these pictures you can see the items were marked right on top of the cables.

If you have a project in Virginia or Maryland where you need to locate post-tension cables, rebar or conduit in concrete prior to taking the risk contact Ground Pentrating Radar Systems, Inc. in Virginia. Regional Director Jamey Harmon can be contacted at (703)728-7333 or by e-mail at jamey.harmon@gp-radar.com.
