AECOM performs environmental investigations and surveys. Often times this means surveying a former fueling station for ground water contaminants or simply installing monitoring wells around existing commercial facilities and properties. To install the monitoring wells a soil boring company is hired and they basically “drill” to a set depth so ground samples can then be tested for environmental hazards. This is a relatively simple process but with congested fueling stations and busy commercial intersections the underground utilities can make it a bit hazardous.

AECOM has contracted GPRS on multiple occasion to locate any and all existing (active and non-active) utilities in the vicinity of their borings. GPRS uses the latest ground penetrating radar technology along with radio detection to determine the presence of these unknown utilities and will make sure that AECOM does not hit one during the drilling process. On the project pictured below GPRS was used to located and mark out utilities on the right-of-way. They located no less than five different pipes (ranging from small electrical conduits to a main water line) running below the surface. The findings cause AECOM to change their original soil boring location to a safe spot, protecting them from a costly hit.

AECOM has been consistently satisfied with the utility locating services provided by GPRS and will continue to contract them for these types of investigations in the future.
