Locating Underground Drain

Jim, again, verifying the markings from the survey at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory at Florida State University.

The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory had a project at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL, where they were going to be digging a pit in an interior, concrete, slab-on-grade floor to install a magnet.  They determined that they needed to survey the area with ground penetrating radar in order to clear a location where they could safely cut the concrete and dig the pit.  The two main focuses of the survey were to locate and avoid any foundation piers that may be in the area and also to avoid any utilities that may run through the floor.  The FSU Mag Lab contacted Chris Moore of Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. of Orlando, FL in order to perform the GPR survey.  Concrete scanning is a service that GPR is routinely used for and Chris was confident that he could help in this matter.

Once on site, Chris Moore and Jim James, GPRS’s Tampa Area Manager, surveyed an area of roughly 10’ x 10’ of concrete slab-on-grade with a 6” x 6” welded wire mesh, and were able to locate both the extents of the concrete foundation pier that was in the area and a drain line that was running through the floor and ensure that both maintained a tolerable clearance from the proposed dig site.  The foundation pier extents and the drain line that was found were marked on the surface using permanent marker, and Florida State University was able to plan the placement of their magnet to avoid these obstacles and without risking having to move the pit after the concrete floor had been cut.  Overall the project was a success, and below are pictures that depict Jim surveying with the 1600 MHz antenna and double checking the markings.  If you are interested in obtaining more information or a quote please visit out “Contact Us” page for a local representative near you.
