WW Gay Fire Protection services had a project at the Westminster Retirement Center in St. Petersburg, FL which involved them digging to install a new fire protection system off of the main water supply to the building. They attempted a few different methods of locating the water line, however, they were unsuccessful. The decided to contact Ground Penetrating Radar Systems to see what type of locating service they could provide. GPRS quickly informed them that with their technology it should not be difficult to locate the water line in question. GPRS mobilized to the site and performed the utility/water line locating survey in about an hour. Within that time they used ground penetrating radar and radio detection to precisely locate the water line.
When the survey was complete WW Gay Fire Protection was surprised to find that the water line did not run as the plans depicted. It was much shallower than anticipated and the path deviated from what they expected. The survey not only located the water line but help WW Gay Fire Protection plan more adequately for how they were going to accomplish the project. In addition to locating the water line, GPRS also located an active gas line which happened to be running in the same trench as the water main. Hitting the gas line, had they not known it was there, could have been costly and potentially dangerous.
WW Gay Fire Protection was very pleased with the findings and accuracy of the ground penetrating radar service and will likely use GPRS for more surveys in the future. The pictures below depict Chris surveying with the 400 MHz antenna and double checking his utility markings.
