IVI Environmental had a project in Ocala, FL where it records indicated the possible presence of an abandoned underground storage tank (UST). IVI had plans to place soil borings throughout the property to test for contaminated soils. They needed to determine if indeed there was an underground storage tank on site as well as locate existing utilities prior to the soil boring process. They contacted Ground Penetrating Radar Systems to mobilize to the site and perform a comprehensive GPR survey. Ground penetrating radar is used in this capacity frequently. Given the science of GPR and the reflective properties of most utilities and underground storage tanks it is an ideal technology for locating unknown objects in the soil.
Once on site Ground Penetrating Radar Systems surveyed the entire ½ acre in about 4 hours locating a few utilities and a small “area of concern”. The “are of concern” is defined as a tank like anomaly discovered by the radar, however, the conclusive evidence needed to deem it a UST is not present. In this situation GPRS typically advises exploratory digging or excavation. The “area of concern” was paint and pin flagged on the ground. The other utilities were also marked so they were not hit during the boring process. A report of the findings was then generated detailing the findings verbally, providing screen shots of the data and pictures of the job site for reference. All-in-all IVI Environmental was pleased with the outcome of the survey and plans to conduct future investigations.
