SWS First Response is an environmental emergency response company that was called to a power substation in Pinellas Park, FL, which is in the St. Petersburg area. They were called due to the determination that multiple transformers had leaked oil into the surrounding soil. SWS’s purpose at the site was to test the surrounding soil for contamination and to remove all soil deemed to be contaminated. They decided to contact Ground Penetrating Radar Systems as they had used them for multiple jobs in the past and knew that GPRS could provide a safe and reliable service to locate all utilities and ground wires in the contaminated area . GPRS mobilized to the site and performed the utility locating survey in about three hours.
Jim James with GPRS was also able to quickly locate electrical conduits and ground wires that were running throughout the substation. When the survey was complete SWS was able to proceed with removing all contaminated soil without fear of hitting these buried utilities. SWS First Response
was very pleased with the findings and accuracy of the ground penetrating radar service and will use GPRS for more surveys in the future. The pictures below show the Jim verifying the utilities that were located using both GPR and radio detection equipment .
