Wigington Fire Systems was involved in a small building project for the Daytona Beach Journal news paper. Wigington was responsible for supplying the new building structure with an updated fire system and this required that they tap into the main water line feeding the building. The difficulty was no one knew where the main water line actually was. The City of Daytona Beach was called to the site and was unable to provide good information on the location of the utility; this lead Wigington to search for other methods of utility locating and they found Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. Ground penetrating radar is frequently used to find underground utilities including water lines, gas lines, sanitary sewer lines, storm line, fiber optic line, etc. therefore this was an easy application for the technology.
Chris Moore with Ground Penetrating Radar Systems of Orlando, FL mobilized to the site and complete the survey in less than four hours. In this time GPR was used to map over 500 lineal feet of water line. The results were very good and the survey revealed that the water line crossed through the new buildings proposed foundation. GPR therefore not only located the line for the updated fire system but also prevented a costly water line break during the digging of the foundation. Overall Wigington was very pleased with the results of the survey and construction was continued without any major disruptions.
