GPRS Locating Buried Utilities at ESPN
Wide World of Sports near Orlando, Florida

The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company had a project at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports at Disney World in Orlando, FL, where they were going to be digging to install a concrete pad for a new back-up generator and determined that they needed to survey the area with ground penetrating radar.  Additionally, they had a need to run the output of the generator underground, through a parking lot, to the building that the generator would be supporting.   The purpose of the GPR survey was to determine the presence and location of any buried utilities that might be in the area in order to avoid them for both placement of the pad and excavation.  In order to perform the GPR survey they contacted Chris Moore of Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. of Orlando, FL.  Utility locating is a service that GPR is routinely used for and Chris was confident that he could help in this matter.

Once on site, GPRS surveyed an area of roughly 30’ x 40’ of concrete slab on grade, which was where the pad for the generator was to be installed, and an area of roughly 40’ x 10’ of asphalt surface where the output cables of the generator were to be routed.  In roughly three hours, Chris Moore and Jim James, GPRS’s Tampa Area Manager, located electrical conduit, telecommunications lines, water lines, and drain lines running through both of these areas for Whiting-Turner.  All of the utilities found were painted on the surface so that the digging could be performed without concern and the pad could be placed to minimize the utilities that would be affected.  Overall the project was a success and below are pictures that depict Jim surveying with the 400 MHz antenna and double checking the utility markings.  If you are interested in obtaining more information or a quote please visit out “Contact Us” page for a local representative near you.

Concrete and asphalt scanning and surveying are common applications performed by the GPR technicians at GPRS.
