In July of 2011, Ground Penetrating Radar Systems completed a job at the Sutton Steam Plant in Wilmington, NC. The project was (GPR) scanning on 8 acres prior to excavation. TIC (The Industrial Company) requested the service of GPRS as the General Contractor for this job. TIC needed to locate utilities, USTs, and any large obstructions up to 15ft. under the ground.
Due to the deep foundations being laid for this addition the 270MHz antenna was required. The 270 MHz antenna is used in conjunction with the 400MHz to ensure quality resolution through all depths of scanning. First, scanning was done with the 400MHz antenna for shallow locating up 6 feet deep. Second, the 270MHz antenna was used for depth up the 15 feet deep. GPRS was able to locate pipes 8-10 feet deep. With the soil type being sandy, both antennas were collecting very clear data. All findings were marked on surface with paint and bright flags clearly visible for the customer to see. Also, GPS was used to log findings. The surveyor was able to use the data collected, and overlay GPRS’s findings onto a drawing.
The technician on this job was Nate Stair. Nate is the Regional Manager of the Wilmington area for Ground Penetrating Radar Systems.
