Terra-Com Environmental is a full service environmental assessment and engineering firm based in Newberry, FL. They specialize in soil contamination and remediation. Terra-Com has used Ground Penetrating Radar Systems in the past, prior to placing soil borings and to locate unknown underground storage tanks (UST’s) on multiple sites around Florida. This project in Ocala was no different. The site was fairly large; roughly ½ acre and they were mainly concerned with locating existing underground storage tanks as well as product supply lines that might still be in the. Once on site, GPRS scanned the entire property on 5’ centers and was able to locate several underground storage tanks. One large tank pit was located containing 4 different USTs. Two additional tanks were located and based on old drawings it was determined that they were kerosene tanks. Additionally, multiple product lines were discovered and marked on the surface.
The information and location of these tanks and product supply lines is crucial to Terra-Com as they will now place soil borings directly around the main areas of concern. Knowing precisely where the underground objects are located ensures that Terra-Com will not hit the objects, causing more environmental damage, and guarantees that Terra-Com will get the most accurate soil readings nearest to the possible contamination points. All-in-all the project was a success and Terra-Com was very pleased with the results of the survey.
You will see pictures below depicting Chris Moore, of GPRS, Inc, surveying and collecting data with the 400MHz ground penetrating radar antenna. The data was processed in the field and the findings were marked with paint in the field.
