Crescent Resources recently completed construction on a multi-building apartment complex just off the Crosstown Expressway in Tampa, FL.  The entrance of the property is nicely acquainted containing a small clock tower on a structural reinforced concrete footer.  The city of Tampa was not on site to perform the typical foundation inspection before the concrete was poured and asked Crescent Resources to have the concrete “x-rayed” to prove the rebar content and spacing.  Crescent Resources contacted Ground Penetrating Radar Systems to see if they might be able help them with this difficult application.  The concrete foundation was buried beneath landscaping and 12” of cover.  Chris Moore with GPRS responded to the need and explained that ground penetrating radar should be able to help them with this project.  They removed the landscaping on one side of the clock tower and exposed the southern edge of the foundation so it could be scanned with GPR.  Several scans were placed along the footer to determine the location of the reinforcing steel.  It was determined that the foundation was roughly 15” thick and contained four pieces of rebar on 12” centers.  GPR was also able to locate the vertical turn bars coming out of the foundation.  GPRS then provided a report the Crescent Resources that they could give to the city of Tampa to prove they had built the structure to meet all code requirements.
