GPR in Manhattan New York

Ground Penetrating Radar with a 1600 MHz antennaIn Manhattan New York, we recently worked for an Engineering firm trying to determine the reinforcing layout of the slab.  Their client wanted to purchase the Condo below their current condo so they could have vaulted ceiling and staircase.  The engineers needed to calculate if the building could structurally sustain a massive opening through the floor.  Not able to use x-ray because of the tenants living in near proximity they utilize Ground Penetrating Radar to determine the makeup of the slab.

We surveyed two areas for the reinforcing layout in an existing two way slab on both floors.  The goal of the survey was to determine the location and map out the reinforcing rebar layout, and determine the thickness of the slab.  We used a 1600 MHz GPR antenna to determine the presence and location of the rebar within the floor.

Our process required a GPR technician to be one site surveying the area.  They performed several scans in a grid pattern at approximately 12 inch intervals. This gave us more then enough data to analyze to determine the reinforcement layout in the concrete.  GPRS then provided their findings to the engineering firm so they could calculate the strength of the floor and determine the size and location of the floor opening.
