Environmental Protection
Industries GPR Project, Niles, IL

GPR system was able to locate the conduit preciselyA building at Niles West High School in a northern suburb of Chicago is undergoing a major renovation as part of an expansion. The renovation includes the installation of several hundred feet of plumbing lines for new restrooms and other facilities. Installing this additional plumbing required cutting hundreds of feet of trench through the existing concrete floor. Previous work at this site had resulted in several conduits being cut, and all parties wanted to prevent this from happening again. Environmental Protection Industries recommended using GPRS to locate any conduits which would need to be avoided while cutting the trench.

GPRS technician Nathan Machel scanned the proposed plumbing trenches to locate any conduits in the vicinity. Several conduits and pipes were detected, including the power feed for the elevators adjacent to the area. The trenches were able to be cut safely around the conduits, avoiding danger to the concrete cutter, power outages, and costly repairs.

Nathan Machel is the manager of GPRS operations in the Chicago Region. He is based in Chicago, IL and he can be reached at 847-514-2277 or by email at nathan.machel@gp-radar.com.  Concrete scanning for the purposes of identifying the location of rebar, electrical conduits, and post-tensioning is the most frequent service performed by the GPR technicians at GPRS.

A conduit was found running through the concrete which was supposed to be cut for a plumbing trench. The GPR system was able to locate the conduit precisely, allowing the concrete to be cut without hitting the conduit.
